Summary: The population size of the spotted sleeper, a fish endemic to Korea and with potential in aquaculture, has declined significantly in recent years. We analyzed microsatellite loci in twelve populations to characterize the population structure and genetic diversity. The results showed high microsatellite diversity but low mitochondrial DNA diversity, with evidence of genetic admixture among populations. Conservation efforts are needed due to the small effective population size and the findings provide insights for conservation strategies.

Summary: This study revealed the population genetic structure of pikeperch in Lake Balaton using microsatellite markers, and found that it forms a metapopulation system. The results also showed that historical exploitation and fish kills had only a slight impact on the population genetic structure. These findings are important for developing area-specific management plans and ensuring the long-term survival of pikeperch in Lake Balaton.

Summary: This study discovered a sheep breed in Chitral, Pakistan that has a relatively shorter gestation period (100 days) but can still give birth to normal lambs. Through the use of DNA markers, researchers identified genetic variations associated with gestation length in sheep, which may be linked to genes controlling this trait. The findings have implications for faster and more cost-effective sheep reproduction.

Summary: Null alleles are recessive alleles that do not affect the phenotype of codominant markers. In microsatellite studies, null alleles are mainly used for pedigree analysis and population genetics calculations. However, the presence of null alleles can lead to biased results and it is important to consider possible solutions.

Summary: The genetic consequences of the geographic distribution of rookeries in Galapagos fur seals were investigated. The results showed that the rookeries on four islands were genetically structured into three main groups. Gene flow analysis suggested migration from west Isabela to Fernandina islands, with limited migration in other directions.

Summary: Habitat loss and fragmentation due to urbanization are significant contributors to the decline of biodiversity, with the western gray squirrel population in urban areas of Southern California decreasing. Griffith Park is home to one of the last urban populations of western gray squirrels in Los Angeles.

Summary: The study found significant genetic differentiation among populations of the Hong Kong oyster in southern China, which could be divided into four genetically distinct and geographically related groups. Factors such as geographic isolation, seawater salinity, and runoff from the Pearl River were identified as leading causes of genetic differentiation. Proper management of individual translocation in aquaculture is necessary to preserve genetic diversity and eventual local adaptation.

Summary: In this study, the population structure of Brucella abortus during infection in cattle was investigated using a library of uniquely barcoded strains. Results showed that cattle restrict the majority of B. abortus introduced via the ocular conjunctiva at the site of infection, with only a small number of strains reaching local lymph nodes. Individual strains were spatially restricted within host tissues, and a small number of unique strains founded granulomas in lymph nodes at 1 week post-infection.

Summary: The study revealed that Chongqing local chicken populations have rich genetic diversity and significant genetic divergence, albeit with high risk during conversion. Effective conservation strategies and utilization of these populations can be implemented based on these findings.

Summary: The study revealed that the Colorado potato beetle populations in Turkey originated from Europe and have low genetic variation, possibly due to a recent spread from America. Region-specific alleles were found in areas with intensive commercial potato cultivation and insecticide use.

Summary: The study evaluated molecular genetic diversity in Ethiopian chickpea germplasm through genotyping with 46 SSR markers. The analysis revealed three major evolutionary/biological groups and six sub-populations within the 118 chickpea genotypes studied. This information can be useful for conservation strategies and trait improvement in chickpea breeding programs.
