Time- and Site-Dependent Postmortem Redistribution of Antidepressants and Neuroleptics in Blood and Alternative Matrices

Lana Brockbals, Sandra N. Staeheli, Dominic Gascho, Lars C. Ebert, Thomas Kraemer, Andrea E. Steuer

Summary: Antidepressants and neuroleptics were investigated for postmortem redistribution, showing significant time-dependent concentration changes. The study found that PMR changes of these drugs do not seem to be relevant within the 24-hour period investigated, despite limitations of the study.

Correlation of age, sex and season with the state of human decomposition as quantified by postmortem computed tomography

Dominic L. C. Guebelin, Akos Dobay, Lars Ebert, Eva Betschart, Michael J. Thali, Sabine Franckenberg

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between the state of decomposition, season of discovery, and sociodemographic factors using the Radiological Alteration Index (RAI) as a proxy. Older males showed the highest RAI, while seasonal effects had minimal influence on RAI in an urban study population where bodies were mostly discovered indoors. Autopsy reports contain valuable data for purposes beyond forensic analysis, such as sociopolitical observations.

Summary: The study successfully established a reliable model using machine learning algorithms and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques to rapidly detect chemical manipulation in urine. The results showed that the model has high accuracy and reliability in detecting urine manipulation and prohibited drugs.

An algorithm for automatically generating gas, bone and foreign body visualizations from postmortem computed tomography data

Lars C. Ebert, Dilan Seckiner, Till Sieberth, Michael J. Thali, Sabine Franckenberg

Summary: Post mortem computed tomography (PMCT) can help locate foreign bodies, bone fractures, and gas accumulations. An algorithm for automated visualization of gas distributions on PMCT image data is presented, generating overview images that depict radiopaque foreign bodies, bones, and gas distributions in one image. While not a substitute for real radiological analysis, this type of visualization provides a quick overview for briefings and image reports.

Evaluation of the mediastinal-thoracic volume ratio on postmortem computed tomography

Vasiliki Chatzaraki, Lars C. Ebert, Michael J. Thali, Anna-Bettina Haidich, Garyfalia Ampanozi

Summary: The aim of this study was to measure the mediastinal-thoracic volume ratio (CTR_VOL) on PMCT to assess the relationship between the heart and lungs in different causes of death. The results showed significant differences among various cause of death categories, with CTR_VOL positively associated with age and BMI, but not gender.

Comparison of superficial wound documentation using 2D forensic photography, 3D photogrammetry, Botscan© and VR with real-life examination

Federico Massini, Lars Ebert, Garyfalia Ampanozi, Sabine Franckenberg, Lena Benz, Till Sieberth

Summary: Evidence acquisition, interpretation and preservation are crucial in forensic case work, with standardized documentation processes being vital. A study comparing different technical documentation methods for superficial wounds found high variability in vocabulary usage among forensic pathologists, complicating exact comparisons of wound descriptions. However, there were no significant differences for any of the four methods compared to the gold standard, challenging the reliability of real-life examination and 2D photography in forensic documentation. Further research is needed to determine the validity of technical examination methods involving multicamera systems and 3D visualization for whole-body examination in the future.

Summary: This paper presents a protocol for 3D data collection of human decomposition in outdoor environments. By using wildlife cameras for observation and constructing 3D models, this approach aims to improve our understanding of the human decomposition process and assist investigators in estimating time of death and reconstructing events.

Forensic volumetric visualization of gunshot residue in its anatomic context in forensic post mortem computed tomography: Development of transfer function preset

Wolf Schweitzer, Janette Verster, Eloisa Aldomar, Lars Ebert, Stephan A. Bolliger, Michael J. Thali, Garyfalia Ampanozi

Summary: The study focused on evaluating gunshot residue (GSR) density in contact shots to the head, using Bayesian likelihood determined from normal distributions of CT-densities of different tissues. The resulting transfer functions matched known GSR deposits, indicating a plausible result. Fast and specific visualization is deemed suitable for routine forensic PMCT examination of GSR in real cases.
