Summary: The association between bactibilia and postoperative complications in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy is influenced by perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis. The presence of cefoxitin-resistant organisms in bile cultures is associated with increased risk of surgical site infection and clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula.

Summary: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the timing of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis affects the risk of surgical site infection, but no significant difference was found within the 60-minute interval before incision. In contrast to earlier studies, this research was unable to replicate differences in SSI risk.

Summary: The study found no significant positive association between invasive dental procedures (IDPs) and late periprosthetic joint infections (LPJIs). Therefore, there is no rationale to administer antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) before IDPs in patients with prosthetic joints, considering the cost and inconvenience of AP, the risk of adverse drug reactions, and the potential for unnecessary use of AP that promotes antibiotic resistance. Dental care should focus on maintaining good oral hygiene rather than recommending AP for IDPs.

Summary: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a combined treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis, but patients are at high risk of infections and complications. Many authors have proposed aggressive screening protocols and vigilant monitoring to minimize and promptly identify infectious complications.

Summary: The benefit of antibiotic prophylaxis for most oral surgical procedures is controversial, with substantial agreement found in some clinical scenarios but discordant responses in others. Specific guidelines on antibiotics in dentistry, particularly on antibiotic prophylaxis in oral surgery, are needed to avoid unnecessary prescriptions, as indicated by the heterogeneous responses collected from the survey sample.

Summary: This scoping review mapped the current evidence on surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, showing that SAP may reduce postoperative SSIs, especially when administered intraoperatively. The findings provide an evidence base for the development of global guidelines for SSI prevention, but more high-quality research reflecting diverse populations and settings is needed.

Summary: The study found that prolonged surgery time is the only factor associated with an increased risk of SSI in dogs, with no association detected between other factors evaluated and SSI occurrence. Orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures, including those involving implants, should not automatically be considered high-risk procedures requiring perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis.

Summary: This study analyzed the appropriateness of antibiotic prophylaxis in dental visits and found that unnecessary antibiotic prophylaxis was highly prevalent but decreased over time. Factors associated with unnecessary prophylaxis included age, sex, geographic region, rurality, type of antibiotic, and dental procedure. Antimicrobial stewardship strategies targeting dentists are needed.

Summary: Despite advances in infection control, surgical site infections (SSIs) continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality. D-PLEX is a novel antibiotic-releasing drug that is administered locally into the incision site for 30 days of constant prophylaxis against SSIs. In preclinical and clinical studies, D-PLEX demonstrated effective antimicrobial activity against both susceptible and resistant bacteria, making it a promising addition to SSI prophylactic bundles. D-PLEX is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the distribution of cefuroxime in orthopedic surgical deadspace in comparison with plasma and bone concentrations. The results showed that cefuroxime had longer time above the minimal inhibitory concentration in the deadspace compared to plasma and bone, indicating its prolonged effectiveness in the deadspace. Based on these findings, cefuroxime appears to be an appropriate prophylactic drug for preventing periprosthetic joint infection.

Summary: This study examined the changes in surgical site infection rates before and after the implementation of antibiotic stewardship programs and infection control measures in a Vietnamese tertiary care hospital. The results showed a decrease in surgical site infection rates after the implementation of these programs, although the difference was not statistically significant. Comprehensive infection control education and policies are needed in Vietnamese hospitals to prevent surgical site infections.

Summary: The need for prophylactic antibiotics in patients with orthopaedic prostheses treated with dental implants is not justified, as there is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of infection.

Summary: The study investigated the trends in antibiotic prophylaxis in a governmental hospital's surgical ward and found issues with proper antibiotic selection and duration of use. Few patients received antibiotics as recommended by the guidelines, highlighting the need for improvement in adherence to the guidelines.

Summary: This study evaluated the timing, duration, and incidence of bacteremia following invasive dental procedures and activities of daily living. Dental extractions, scaling and root planing, and oral health procedures had the highest frequency of bacteremia, while toothbrushing, flossing, and chewing also caused bacteremia but with lower frequency.

Summary: TLE is the standard of care for managing patients with cardiac implantable electronic device infection or lead-related complications in Latin America. A survey revealed that most centers in Latin America performing TLE use mechanical rotating sheaths as the main tool, indicating a need for future prospective registries to assess success rates.
