Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is one important member of heat shock protein (Hsp) family that is responsible for various stresses, especially thermal stress. Here we examined the response of Hsp70 gene to both chronic and acute thermal exposure in Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino). For the chronic exposure, abalones were maintained at 8, 12, 20, and 30 degrees C for four months and their mRNA levels were measured. The highest mRNA level of Hsp70 gene relative to actin gene was detected in the 30 degrees C-acclimated group, followed by the 8 degrees C-acclimated group and then the 12 degrees C-and 20 degrees C-acclimated groups. After the long-term acclimation, gills from each of the above acclimation groups were dissected and exposed to different temperatures between 8 degrees C and 38 degrees C for 30 min. Hsp70 expression in gills acclimated to different temperatures responded differentially to the same temperature exposure. The incubation temperature that induced maximum Hsp70 mRNA expression was higher in the higher temperature acclimation groups than lower temperature groups. Pacific abalones could alter the expression pattern of Hsp70 gene according to environmental thermal conditions, through which they deal with the stress of thermal variations.

Strategies of carbon use and photosynthetic performance of the two seaweeds Gracilaria chouae and Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis under different conditions of the carbonate system

Summary: The use of Gracilaria chouae and Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis in aquaculture has been expanding rapidly due to their bio- and eco-functions. This study explored the carbon use mechanism of these seaweeds in different carbonate systems. It was found that high CO2 and normal HCO3- concentrations led to an increase in net photosynthetic rate and other physiological parameters in both seaweeds. Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis showed higher photosynthetic rates and pH changes. The inhibition experiments revealed different mechanisms of HCO3- utilization in these seaweeds.

Summary: This study investigates the role of interleukin-2 inducible T cell kinase (ITK) in the adaptive immune response of Nile tilapia and its regulation of T-cell activation. The results show that ITK plays a critical role in regulating T-cell activation in Nile tilapia and is involved in the lymphocyte-mediated adaptive immunity of fish.

Influences of Substrate Grain Size on the Burrowing Behavior of Juvenile Meretrix meretrix

Summary: This study investigated the effects of substrate grain size on substrate preference, burrowing ability, and behavior in juvenile Meretrix meretrix. The results showed that the juveniles had a significant preference for and stronger burrowing ability in fine sand. As the substrate grain size increased, the burrowing ability and preference decreased. The selection process of the substrate was divided into four stages: preparation, selection, burrowing, and end stages. These findings have implications for habitat selection and aquaculture of M. meretrix.

Glutamine Metabolism Underlies the Functional Similarity of T Cells between Nile Tilapia and Tetrapod

Kang Li, Xiumei Wei, Xinying Jiao, Wenhai Deng, Jiaqi Li, Wei Liang, Yu Zhang, Jialong Yang

Summary: This study in Nile tilapia models suggests that T cells play a critical role in resisting Edwardsiella piscicida infection via cytotoxicity and are essential for IgM(+) B cell response. The functional similarity of T cells between tilapia and mammals is speculated to be due to transcriptional networks and metabolic reprogramming triggered by mTORC1 and MAPK/ERK pathways. This study provides important insights into T cell evolution and potential interventions for human immunodeficiency.

Effects of rising temperature on growth and energy budget of juvenile Eogammarus possjeticus (Amphipoda: Anisogammaridae)

Suyan Xue, Yuze Mao, Jiaqi Li, Jianguang Fang, Fazhen Zhao

Summary: The study investigated the growth and energy budget of marine amphipod juvenile Eogammarus possjeticus at different temperatures. Results showed that rising temperatures led to increased mortality rates, decreased feeding ability at high temperatures, and changes in energy distribution. Rising temperatures appeared to increase metabolism and energy consumption in amphipods while decreasing energy used for growth, resulting in slow growth and small body size during high-temperature summer periods.
