The identification of degradation products generated upon photolysis of estrone (E1), a natural estrogenic hormone, under simulated UV irradiation conditions was addressed by the use of LC-Q-TOF mass spectrometry. The structures of the main degradation products were elucidated, demonstrating how the use of model molecules 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphtol (THN), 2-methylcyclopentanone (MCP), labeled molecule estrone D-4 (E1-D-4), the investigation of the fragmentation pathways of the parent E1, the concurrent use of CID and exact mass measurements permit the characterization of structural modifications induced by photodegradation processes. In the present study, we identified nine major by-products of which seven photoproducts correspond to E1H(+) modified in positions other than the C-2, C-4 and C-16 of E1. Most of them showed one to three additional hydroxylations preferentially located on the aromatic ring of the parent E1, which confirms that these products may present environmental risk. Applications to real water samples have been conducted to extend the validity of the present study to environmental samples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reaction of Phosphines with 1-Azido-(2-halogenomethyl)benzene Giving Aminophosphonium-Substituted Indazoles

Thibault Tannoux, Nicolas Casaretto, Sophie Bourcier, Vincent Gandon, Audrey Auffrant

Summary: The reaction between a 1-azido-(2-halogenomethyl)benzene and a phosphine gives different products depending on the nature of the halogen, the phosphine itself, and the solvent employed. While PPh3 (2 equiv) reacts with the chloro reagent in toluene to give the expected iminophosphorane- phosphonium adduct, trialkylphosphines (PCy3 and PEt3) surprisingly furnish an aminophosphonium substituted by a zwitterionic indazole. The bicyclic product can also form from PPh3 using the bromo reagent in acetonitrile.

Investigation of microbial community changes in petroleum polluted sediments during hydrocarbons degradation

Mouna Mahjoubi, Simone Cappello, Santina Santisi, Afef Najjari, Yasmine Souissi, Ameur Cherif

Summary: Bioremediation is an effective strategy for eliminating pollutants by transforming toxic petroleum components into less harmful metabolites. Diversity of bacterial communities shift during oil-biodegradation process, with a decrease in diversity and an increase in abundance of hydrocarbonoclastic species, such as Alcanivorax. This shift is associated with a high degradation rate of crude oil, decreased sediment toxicity, and potential for future selection of efficient consortia for hydrocarbon contaminated site cleanup.

Summary: Korean hand papermaking is a well-known cultural tradition in the Korean peninsula, but scientific analysis of paper itself is rare. This study chemically investigated over three hundred Korean handmade papers and analyzed their property data, revealing that the paper structure is determined by the material preparing and making craft, which influences the physical properties of the paper. Different sheet formation techniques affect paper density, fiber orientation, and physical properties, impacting paper performance and applications.

Summary: This study aims to facilitate the characterization of beeswax-rosin mixtures used for sealing wet collections. By using DSC and ATR-FTIR methodologies on model mixtures and historical sealants, promising results were obtained. The impact of ageing or possible addition of third-party fatty materials such as animal fat or vegetal oil on the results was also discussed.

Characterization of photoproducts and global ecotoxicity of chlorphenesin: A preservative used in skin care products

Summary: Chlorphenesin, used as a preservative in cosmetic products, was found to produce three by-products during photolysis, with the overall ecotoxicity increasing with irradiation time. Among the degradation compounds identified, 4-chlorophenol is likely a contributing factor to the increased toxicity in the photolyzed solution.

Evaluation of Degradation of Japanese Hanging Scrolls Using Relative Peak Area of Volatile Organic Compounds

Kang Lee, Michel Sablier, Toshiharu Enomae, Masamitsu Inaba

Summary: This study measured the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated from naturally aged Japanese hanging scrolls and their model samples using SPME-GC-MS. Different painting papers and raw materials were found to have an effect on the degradation state of hanging scrolls. VOC-based degradation markers were identified and their applicability for evaluating the degradation of actual Japanese hanging scrolls was considered.

Extremophilic Bacterium Halomonas desertis G11 as a Cell Factory for Poly-3-Hydroxybutyrate-co-3-Hydroxyvalerate Copolymer's Production

Khouloud Hammami, Yasmine Souissi, Amal Souii, Awatef Ouertani, Darine El-Hidri, Marwa Jabberi, Habib Chouchane, Amor Mosbah, Ahmed Slaheddine Masmoudi, Ameur Cherif, Mohamed Neifar

Summary: This study investigated an extremophilic bacterium isolated from saline sediment in the Tunisian desert for its ability to produce microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). The bacterium, Halomonas desertis G11, was found to accumulate intracellular PHA granules and was optimized for maximum PHA yield using glycerol as a substrate. Genomic analysis revealed the presence of structural genes involved in PHA metabolism. These findings suggest that this extremophilic bacterium has potential as a cell factory for the conversion of renewable glycerol into high-value PHA products.

Summary: The extremophilic bacteria Microbacterium metallidurans TL13, isolated from tannery wastewater, shows potential for degrading plant cell wall and producing biofuel. Through genomic and enzymatic analyses, TL13 reveals genes encoding various enzymes involved in cellulose and hemicellulose degradation. The presence of these genes is well synchronized with the higher enzymatic activities observed in TL13 under saline conditions. TL13 strain also demonstrates efficient hydrolysis of untreated Posidonia oceanica waste into fermentable sugars, making it a promising green tool for seagrass-based biorefinery.

Summary: A new variant of the indophenine reaction was used to synthesize a series of quinoidal molecules. The previously reported method had low yield and selectivity, with the formation of by-products. A modified protocol using tertiary alcohol as a starting material was proposed to increase yield and avoid complex purification issues. The influence of the pi-bridge conjugation length on the electronic structure of the quinoidal compounds was investigated.

Theoretical Investigation of the Mechanism of the Hock Rearrangement with InCl3 as Catalyst

Agathe Fayet, Sophie Bourcier, Nicolas Casaretto, Bastien Nay, Gilles Frison

Summary: The Hock rearrangement is an acid catalyzed reaction involving organic hydroperoxides and resulting in an oxidative cleavage of adjacent C-C bonds. Its mechanism has not been studied in detail. In this work, we conducted a theoretical study on the Hock rearrangement using InCl3 as a Lewis acid catalyst. We aimed to understand the mechanism of this reaction and rationalize the influence of substrate electronic properties. Our investigation revealed the co-existence of several energetically close reaction pathways and suggested that In2Cl6 species coordinated to the substrate play a central role in the catalytic cycle.
