Two complementary LC-MS ionization methods, electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), have been optimized to determine three natural estrogenic compounds (estrone, 17 beta-estradiol and estriol) and two synthetic estrogenic compounds (17 alpha-ethynylestradiol and diethylstilbestrol) in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The wastewater samples were first subjected to solid-phase extraction coupled with desalting extraction to remove matrix interference. The analytes were then detected using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) with ESI and dopant-assisted (DA) APPI to evaluate the ion suppression effect and to complement the detection and quantification of estrogenic compounds in complex wastewater samples. The average ion suppression factors for the extracts of the WWTP influent analyzed using ESI and APPI were 52 +/- 5% and 27 +/- 7%, respectively. The sensitivity and ionization efficiency of the LC-ESI-MS-MS system decreased dramatically when a complex matrix was present in the WWTP influent sample. Estrogenic compounds could be detected in the WWTP influent and effluent samples at concentrations below the parts-per-billion level. The lower detection limits obtained when using ESI and the higher matrix tolerance of the APPI method allowed the complete quantification of estrogenic Compounds in very complex samples in a complementary manner. Summary: This study reveals a potential link between organophosphate pesticide exposure and ADHD, related to oxidative stress and PON genetic polymorphisms. Children exposed to organophosphate pesticides may have higher levels of DMP and HNE-MA. The PON1 genetic polymorphism is associated with exposure levels and the risk of ADHD.

Summary: Photoinitiators used in ultraviolet-cured ink may migrate from food packaging materials into food products. A dietary risk assessment was conducted to quantify the exposure to benzophenone-type photoinitiators and reduce associated uncertainties. The study found that the estimated daily dose of photoinitiators was below the toxicological concern threshold, indicating an acceptable level of cumulative toxicity. However, different results may occur if specific migration limits for unmeasured photoinitiator residues in other foodstuffs are followed.

Summary: The development of a rapid and accurate analytical method for determining levels of antibacterial agents, plasticizers, and ultraviolet filters in biosamples is crucial for individual exposure assessment. This study developed an ID-UPLC-MS/MS method with SLE pretreatment to determine the levels of four parabens, triclosan, triclocarban, and benzophenone-3 in human urine. The method showed good performance and sensitivity in detecting these chemicals, making it valuable for human biomonitoring.

Summary: Air pollution is associated with respiratory diseases, and urban air pollution is caused by various sources of emissions. The particles and gases emitted are the main components of air pollution that enter the lungs through respiration. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) can penetrate deep into the respiratory tract through inhalation and has been suggested as a causative factor for adverse respiratory health. Additionally, the lung harbors a diverse microbial community (microbiome) that maintains normal balance but can be significantly altered in certain circumstances.
