Summary: Thermolysis of a 1,3-dioxa-2-phospholane supported by the terphenyl ligand Ar-iPr4 (Ar-iPr4=[C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr(2))]) at 150 degrees C gives [(ArPO2)-P-iPr4](2), a dimeric compound with a 4-membered P-O-P-O ring. The structure of [(ArPO2)-P-iPr4](2) was confirmed by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the dimeric structure persisted in solution and this was supported by VT NMR spectroscopy and DOSY experiments. The addition of different ligands resulted in increased yield of the product at lower temperature.

Summary: Nanocrystals of Si doped with S, Se and Te were synthesized at high temperatures and their structure, morphology, and optical and electrical properties were studied. The presence of sulfur and selenium resulted in recrystallization of Si and the formation of crystalline rods with unique cross-sections, while samples doped with sulfur and selenium showed high conductivity.

Summary: This study reports the Te-II/Te-III-catalyzed dehydrogenative C-H phenothiazination of challenging phenols with electron-withdrawing substituents under mild aerobic conditions, achieving high yields. The unexpected Te-II/Te-III radical catalytic properties were characterized through cyclic voltammetry, EPR spectroscopy, kinetic experiments, and DFT calculations.

Summary: A novel synthetic method has been developed for the preparation of 2-N,N-areno[1,3]tellurazoles with high yields. This method is specific to the synthesis of 2-dialkylaminotellurazoles and does not work with sulfur or selenium congeners. X-ray crystallography characterization of selected samples revealed a unique supramolecular structure.

Summary: The majority of binary chalcogen fluorides are highly reactive and difficult to handle. This study demonstrates a convenient and safe method to obtain crystalline donor-acceptor complexes between sulfur and selenium difluorides and selenium and tellurium tetrafluorides using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), without the need for generating unstable EF2 (E=S, Se) or toxic and corrosive SeF4.

Summary: A new tellurium and mercury containing macrocycle was synthesized via (2+2) condensation reaction and exhibited an unsymmetrical figure-of-eight conformation in the crystal structure. The resulting silver complexes showed intramolecular Hg...Ag and Te...Ag interactions as well as intermolecular Hg...Hg interactions, forming an extended 1D molecular chain in a non-linear manner. Solution studies using Hg-199 and Te-125 NMR spectroscopy, absorption, and emission spectroscopy further investigated the behavior of Hg...Ag and Te...Ag interactions. DFT calculations, AIM analysis, NCI, and NBO analysis supported the experimental findings and revealed the stronger intermolecular Hg...Hg interaction compared to the intramolecular Hg...Ag interactions.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs), including task-specific ILs, have the ability to dissolve various solids at moderate temperatures without special reaction vessels. This study investigated the synthesis of sulfides of various elements in ILs as well as the dissolution of antimony sulfide in ILs. Additionally, a new quadruple heterocubane cation was discovered through the crystallization of Sb2S3 in a Lewis-acidic IL.

Summary: Microbial transformations are important for the Se cycle, as they convert Se oxyanions into elemental selenium (Se-0) nanostructures, reducing their solubility and toxicity. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been studied for its ability to efficiently reduce selenite to biogenic Se-0 (Bio-Se-0) and retain it in bioreactors. In this study, selenite removal and Bio-Se-0 biogenesis in different size groups of aerobic granules were investigated. Large granules (>= 0.5 mm) showed rapid and efficient selenite reduction and Bio-Se-0 formation due to better entrapment capabilities. SEM-EDX analysis confirmed the formation of Se-0 spheres and their association with the granules. A bacterial strain, identified as Microbacterium azadirachtae, was found to efficiently reduce selenite under aerobic conditions and immobilize the resulting Bio-Se-0. The findings suggest the potential use of large AGS and AGS-borne bacteria in bioremediation of metal(loid) oxyanions and bio-recovery.

Summary: A geometrically constrained phosphine bearing a tridentate NNS pincer ligand has been successfully used to reversibly activate ammonia through N-H bond scission upon mild heating in solution, as demonstrated through experimental and theoretical studies. The geometric constraint also leads to the formation of cooperative addition products, and the thermodynamics of these transformations are substrate-dependent.

Summary: This study examines the separation of tellurium from cadmium telluride through a unique combination of mild, anhydrous chlorination and complexation. The results show a significant separation between tellurium and other elements, such as cadmium, selenium, and sulfur, after treating zinc telluride and a complex mixture of metal chalcogenides. These findings have important implications for future applications in CdTe photovoltaic waste treatment.

Summary: Chalcogens, especially sulfur and selenium, have diverse applications from pharmaceuticals to energy storage. This study introduces a new methodology for controlling the morphology of chalcogen nanostructures by leveraging the interaction between metal oxides and polysulfides/polyselenides. Different metal oxide substrates induce the formation of various multidimensional chalcogen morphologies, which are applied as cathodes in Li-chalcogen batteries with demonstrated structure-performance correlation. This metal oxide-mediated control of chalcogen morphology is a general strategy that can be applied to advance chalcogen-based applications in other fields.
