Fabian Huxoll, Froze Jameel, Jonas Bianga, Thomas Seidensticker, Matthias Stein, Gabriele Sadowski, Dieter Vogt

Summary: This method combines thermodynamic activity models and quantum chemical calculations to efficiently screen suitable solvents for homogeneous catalyzed reactions through optimizing predicted kinetics based on activity coefficients. It reduces time and lab resources for solvent selection to a minimum.

Aqueous Biphasic Hydroaminomethylation Enabled by Methylated Cyclodextrins: Sensitivity Analysis for Transfer into a Continuous Process

Kai U. Kuennemann, Dennis Weber, Chryslain Becquet, Sebastien Tilloy, Eric Monflier, Thomas Seidensticker, Dieter Vogt

Summary: This study scaled up the highly regioselective Hydroaminomethylation (HAM) of 1-decene with diethylamine for a potential continuous process application. By adding cyclodextrins as a green mass transfer agent, the reaction rate and selectivity towards linear amines were successfully increased. Various parameters influencing the stability and activity of the system were investigated.

Continuous co-product separation by organic solvent nanofiltration for the hydroaminomethylation in a thermomorphic multiphase system

Summary: This study developed a hybrid, continuous reaction and separation process for catalytic auto-tandem hydro-aminomethylation (HAM) reaction, demonstrating efficient production of valuable higher aliphatic amines and avoidance of product accumulation through effective separation and reuse of active catalyst. With an integrated catalyst recycling strategy and membrane-based separation of co-product, the process operated continuously for 75 hours, showing stable process operation and high catalyst rejection rates.

Predicting Solvent Effects on Homogeneity and Kinetics of the Hydroaminomethylation: A Thermodynamic Approach Using PC-SAFT

Fabian Huxoll, Anna Kampwerth, Thomas Seidensticker, Dieter Vogt, Gabriele Sadowski

Summary: Solvents have a significant impact on the phase behavior and kinetics of chemical reactions, especially for complex reactions in solvent mixtures. This study proposes a thermodynamic approach to predict the effects of solvents on both reaction rates and phase behavior, which was successfully applied to the hydroaminomethylation of 1-decene. The predicted results were in good agreement with experimental data. This method can greatly reduce the experimental effort required.

Selective Synthesis of Primary Amines by Kinetic-based Optimization of the Ruthenium-Xantphos Catalysed Amination of Alcohols with Ammonia

Christian Heider, Dominik Pietschmann, Dieter Vogt, Thomas Seidensticker

Summary: This study presents the selective synthesis of primary amines directly from various alcohols and ammonia using a homogeneous catalyst based on HRuCl(CO)(PPh3)(3) and Xantphos. The optimized conditions were determined by understanding the influence of parameters such as temperature, ammonia excess, and substrate concentration. The catalytic activity of the commercially available Xantphos system was drastically improved.

Sodium ethoxide as an environmentally benign and cost-effective catalyst for chemical depolymerization of post-consumer PET waste

Saqib Javed, Dennis Ropel, Dieter Vogt

Summary: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste is difficult to degrade and has a low recycling rate, but glycolysis using sodium ethoxide (EtONa) as a catalyst shows promise for chemical recycling of PET. Through response surface methodology and regression models, optimization of reaction parameters resulted in high PET conversion (98%) and BHET yield (76%). Compared to other catalysts, EtONa showed superior performance, making it a promising low-cost catalyst for large-scale PET depolymerization.

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of mixed anhydrides via carbonylative telomerization

Kevin Hares, Dennis Vogelsang, Charlotte S. Wernsdoerfer, Dennis Panke, Dieter Vogt, Thomas Seidensticker

Summary: Mixed carboxylic anhydrides were directly accessed for the first time through homogeneous palladium catalysis from 1,3-butadiene and carboxylic acids. The respective mixed 3,8-nonadienoic anhydrides were formed in a single reaction step under carbonylative telomerization conditions with high yields. These highly reactive mixed anhydrides can be used consecutively in a one-pot manner and selectively transfer the newly formed unsaturated C9 unit.

Synthesis of a H-Sulfo-POSS catalyst and application in the acetalization of glycerol with 2-butanone to yield a biofuel additive

Viktor Soederholm, Jesus Esteban, Dieter Vogt

Summary: Nanosized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have been used as molecular weight enlarged structures for various purposes due to their ease of synthesis and modification. In this study, octaphenyl-POSS was modified with chlorosulfonic acid to obtain multifunctional acidic materials (H-Sulfo-POSS) and applied in the acetalization of glycerol with 2-butanone. The materials showed different catalytic activities and stabilities based on their degree of sulfonation.
