Summary: In this study, the oxidative depolymerization of Kraft lignin at 180℃ was demonstrated to produce vanillin with a yield of up to 6.2 wt% and 92% relative to the maximum yield from the quantification reaction using nitrobenzene. The use of peroxodicarbonate as a green oxidizer prevents the use of toxic and/or harmful reagents, and the resulting waste can be used as a makeup chemical in the pulping process. The oxidation and degradation of Kraft lignin were analyzed through UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy.

Summary: The green microalga Botryococcus braunii forms a colony of cells held together by an intricate extracellular matrix, which serves as a storage location for liquid hydrocarbons. The extracellular matrix in the B race of B. braunii consists of various elements, including a cross-linked hydrocarbon network, a retaining wall, polysaccharide fibrils, and a polysaccharide associated protein. The polysaccharide isolated from this microalga is highly branched, with a galactan backbone and short branches containing various sugars.

Summary: Fibre-reinforced epoxy composites are widely used in load-bearing applications due to their light weight and high durability. However, the lack of viable recycling strategies for these composites has led to their disposal in landfills. This study presents a chemical recycling approach that allows for the recovery of polymer building blocks and intact fibres from epoxy composites.

Summary: This article investigates the use of added-lignin thermoformed pulps (ALTP) as a new alternative for green materials. By adding technical lignin to mechanical pulp and subsequently thermoforming it, a biobased material with higher lignin content than natural levels was obtained. The material showed improved density, reduced water-uptake, and modified mechanical properties. Pure lignin had a more beneficial effect on stiffness compared to hydrolysis lignin. ALTP has the potential to be used in developing new pulp products and plastics-replacements, where the ratio and type of added-lignin can be adjusted to achieve desired characteristics.

Summary: Nowadays, there is a growing concern about the flammability and harm caused by plastic materials used in daily applications. In this study, researchers investigated the use of lignin, a renewable and readily available resource, in fire safety plastics. By incorporating TiO2 and lignin into polypropylene, new composites with improved flame-retardant properties were synthesized. The results showed that the addition of 25wt.% TiO2-lignin significantly reduced the heat release rate of the materials, while maintaining good flame retardancy and mechanical properties.

Summary: Lignin, as the second most abundant natural biopolymer, has drawn significant interest for material applications, however, its hydrophilicity and poor dispersibility have limited its wide scale application. The novel silylation reaction was successfully employed to enhance the hydrophobicity of kraft lignin, demonstrating improvements in wettability and dispersibility in natural rubber composites. The incorporation of modified lignin showed enhanced mechanical properties in composites, highlighting its potential as a valuable additive.

Summary: Cyclodextrin and its derivative (CDs) are natural building blocks for functional biomaterials. Natural polysaccharide hydrogels (NPHs) are widely used in biomedical applications, and CD regulated NPHs (CD-NPHs) improve their mechanical qualities and gelation times. However, there is still no comprehensive review on CD-NPHs regarding their construction, classification, and application in biomedical fields. This article provides a systematic overview of CD-NPHs classification and their role in biomedical fields, and discusses the current challenges and prospects, aiming to facilitate the development of CD-NPHs-based biomedicine.

Summary: In this study, quaternized and crosslinked carboxymethylcellulose sodium (QCCMC) films, as well as quaternized (QCMC) and crosslinked CMC Na (CCMC) derivatives, were prepared using a one-step synthesis. The derivatives were characterized using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Size-exclusion chromatographic multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALS) was used to determine the solubilities of the derivatives and the gyration radii (Rg) of the polysaccharide coils.

Summary: Liver disease is a major cause of global mortality, and identifying biomarkers for diagnosing its progression is crucial for improving outcomes. Targeted mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for verifying biomarker candidates and clinical applications, particularly for glycoproteins translation. However, the limitation of analyzing only one sample per run has become apparent. In this study, a high-throughput intact N-glycopeptides quantification strategy was developed, allowing the validation of 20 samples per run with an average analysis time of 3 minutes per sample. The strategy was applied in a cohort of 461 serum samples and identified a panel of 10 IgG N-glycopeptides that have strong clinical utility in evaluating the severity of liver disease.
