Gut microbes and health

Julia Alvarez, Jose Manuel Fernandez Real, Francisco Guarner, Miguel Gueimonde, Juan Miguel Rodriguez, Miguel Saenz de Pipaon, Yolanda Sanz

Summary: The human body is inhabited by numerous microorganisms, especially in the intestine, which play a crucial role in various physiological processes. Some chronic diseases in developed societies are associated with dysbiosis, which may be linked to changes in microbiome transmission, use of antibiotics, and dietary habits. Therefore, maintaining diversity in the microbiota is essential for health promotion and disease prevention.

Differential Effects of Western and Mediterranean-Type Diets on Gut Microbiota: A Metagenomics and Metabolomics Approach

Claudia Barber, Marianela Mego, Carlos Sabater, Fernando Vallejo, Rogger Alvaro Bendezu, Marcela Masihy, Francisco Guarner, Juan Carlos Espin, Abelardo Margolles, Fernando Azpiroz

Summary: The study compared the effects of a fibre-enriched Mediterranean diet and a Western-type diet on gut microbiota, digestive function, and sensations in healthy men. Despite minimal differences in microbiota composition between the diets, there were significant variations in microbial metabolism and metabolic pathways. Individuals with more stable microbiotas showed less noticeable effects of dietary changes.

Anti-Inflammatory Effect of an O-2-Substituted (1-3)-β-D-Glucan Produced by Pediococcus parvulus 2.6 in a Caco-2 PMA-THP-1 Co-Culture Model

Sara Notararigo, Encarnacion Varela, Anna Otal, Maria Antolin, Francisco Guarner, Paloma Lopez

Summary: Bacterial beta-glucans are polysaccharides that can protect bacteria or participate in biofilm formation and bacterial cell adhesion. This study found that the O-2-substituted (1-3)-beta-D-glucan synthesized by Pediococcus parvulus 2.6 has a similar structure to laminarin and has the ability to modulate the immune system and adhere to human enterocytes. The study also revealed that this glucan is non-toxic to cells and can regulate cytokine production.

Gut Microbiota Composition in Long-Remission Ulcerative Colitis is Close to a Healthy Gut Microbiota

Claudia Herrera-deGuise, Encarna Varela, Guillaume Sarrabayrouse, Marta Pozuelo del Rio, Virginia Robles Alonso, Natalia Borruel Sainz, Francesc Casellas, Luis Fernando Mayorga, Chaysavanh Manichanh, Fernando Azpiroz Vidaur, Francisco Guarner

Summary: The gut microbial ecosystem in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with long-term remission shows similarities to healthy individuals. Patients with short-term remission or disease flare exhibit reduced diversity and richness of gut microbiota, as well as an increase in potentially harmful bacteria. Patients in long-term remission have a composition of fecal bacteria similar to healthy controls, and the presence of A. muciniphila in fecal samples predicts flare-free outcomes.
