Summary: African governments implemented mobility restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19, resulting in widespread impacts on incomes and food consumption. However, the actual impact was smaller than predicted, with severity of restrictions playing a significant role. Policy-making during a pandemic should consider the effects on rural and urban areas, farming and non-farming households, as well as richer and poorer households.

Summary: The expression of life-history traits in fish is influenced by both current and past environmental conditions. This study investigates the effects of carry-over from larval traits and environmental conditions on the life-history traits of European seabass using otolith microstructure analysis. The results show that larval traits have a minor impact compared to the nursery environment on post-settlement traits.

Summary: Food insecurity is a prevalent issue among individuals with low income, and exploring creative solutions such as meal kits could potentially improve food access. A pilot study focusing on African American primary food preparers with children and low income showed that participants highly utilized and accepted the meal kit program, indicating that meal kits may offer a solution to improving food access for families with low income. Participants were willing to pay $88.61 for a meal kit with three meals after the intervention, suggesting that affordability is key to the success of meal kit programs for low-income families.

Summary: Inequitable access to food negatively impacts the health and quality of life of urban residents, especially in regions known as Food Deserts. This study found that the effectiveness of interventions to increase food access depends on local demographic factors and infrastructure, particularly bus service. Proximity to stores and the presence of a child under 5 in the household were identified as key factors limiting access to healthy food, while households with more than 4 members had the greatest positive impact on food access.

Summary: This study investigates the ethnic drivers of food-related income shocks on African conflict, finding that differentiating between organized armed-force and non-organized conflict is more informative. Conflict is driven by opportunity cost and state capacity mechanisms, with ethnic cleavages playing a large role in organized armed-force conflict transmission. Ethnic heterogeneity sensitivity is higher for producer-price and drought shocks compared to consumer-price changes.

Summary: The study found that the financial crisis associated with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated food insecurity in the United States, providing an opportunity to rethink the nutrition-assistance system. Participants selectively took into account cost, nutrition, and flavor when procuring food and preparing meals, strategically thinking about their family situations. They did not think about assistance programs in isolation, but holistically considered their options.

Summary: The objective of this article is to evaluate the effects of geographical distance and age on the representations of traditional products using Maroilles cheese as a case study. Through a free word association task, nine groups of participants from different places in France were tested at three different distances from the Maroilles production area and three different age groups. The study highlights that geographic proximity promotes information sharing and knowledge acquisition among consumers. It also shows the impact of geographical distance on the valence of terms associated with Maroilles cheese, emphasizing the importance of local identity and ethnocentrism for artisanal products.
