Summary: This study assessed the diet quality of pregnant women in an urban area of Japan, finding that regardless of weight, women had insufficient intake of carbohydrate-containing staple foods, vegetable dishes, and fruit. Underweight women with inadequate weight gain had low energy intake but high diet quality, while women within the recommended energy intake range had low diet quality and inappropriate weight gain. Therefore, pregnant Japanese women should prioritize maintaining diet quality and increasing energy intake after evaluating their individual diet quality.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentrations and predictors of phthalate metabolites in urine samples of pregnant women from the ongoing Zunyi cohort in Southwest China. The findings indicated that pregnant women and fetuses in Zunyi may be generally harmed by high exposure of phthalate metabolites, especially mono-n-butyl phthalate. Additionally, phthalate metabolites showed a differential distribution among the study population based on demographic and seasonal factors.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the exposure levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites among pregnant women in an economically underdeveloped region in southwest China. The results revealed that these pregnant women were exposed to different PAH metabolites, and identified predictive factors associated with high concentrations of PAH metabolites. This is of significant importance for developing targeted interventions to reduce PAH exposure during pregnancy.

Summary: This study analyzed the micronutrient intake of a group of pregnant women and compared it to the Dietary Reference Intakes. The majority of participants did not meet the recommended intake levels through diet alone, but supplement intake improved the intake for most micronutrients. Choline, magnesium, and potassium were exceptions. More research is needed to determine if these findings are applicable to the general population.

Summary: This study describes the histopathological placental features of a large sample of SARS-CoV-2-positive women in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that placentas do not seem to be a preferential target for the new Coronavirus infection, as there were no specific pathological findings and the inflammation observed did not have significant perinatal consequences.

Summary: Based on the data from health registries in Sweden and Norway, this study found variations in the vaccination uptake among pregnant women against COVID-19. Pregnant women who were not vaccinated tended to be younger, have lower education and income levels, come from regions other than Scandinavia, smoke during pregnancy, not live with a partner, and have gestational diabetes.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of hepatitis B carrier status on pregnancy complications in pregnant women in China. The results showed that HBsAg carriers were more likely to experience pregnancy-induced hypertension, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and have lower birth weight infants compared to normal pregnant women. However, they had a lower risk of gestational hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism of pregnancy.

Summary: The study in Slovenia found that pregnant women and postpartum mothers generally have good knowledge and practices of food safety, especially in basic food handling. However, there are still microbial risks in the home environment that need to be addressed with further education and guidance. Pregnant women and postpartum mothers performed significantly better in food safety practices than the nonpregnant group.

Summary: This scoping review examines the factors influencing food insecurity among pregnant women and families with young children in high-income countries. It identifies social, economic, and health risk factors, as well as food access and utilization factors, and health and dietary outcomes associated with food insecurity. The findings can contribute to a better understanding and measurement of food insecurity, and inform the development of programs and policies. The review also highlights the lack of literature from high-income countries outside of the US.

Summary: The adherence to the Healthy Food Pyramid (HFP) was investigated among pregnant, lactating, and non-pregnant/non-lactating (NPNL) women. Lactating women had the lowest adherence score, while pregnant women had the highest. Maternal age was positively correlated with adherence in pregnant and lactating women, and factors like educational level and monthly income influenced adherence positively. Targeting nutritional interventions towards breastfeeding mothers of young age and low socioeconomic and educational levels may improve adherence to the HFP. The findings can help in designing recommendation guidelines and nutritional educational interventions for specific populations.

Summary: This study examines the prevalence of overweight and obesity in pregnant women from different ethnic groups and investigates the associated comorbidities. The results show an increasing trend in obesity among pregnant women, with a higher incidence of overweight and obesity in certain ethnic groups. High body mass index (BMI) is found to be associated with hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus, and depression.

Summary: The study found that periconceptional folate supplementation was not associated with cerebral palsy (CP), while supplementation during gestational weeks 9-12 was linked to a reduced risk of CP. Midpregnancy supplementation or dietary folate alone did not show a significant association with CP. Strong inverse associations were observed with low gross motor function impairment, suggesting potential benefits of folate intake during gestational weeks 9-12 for reducing the risk of CP.

Summary: This study examined the mediating role of prenatal and early postnatal factors and child energy balance-related behaviours in the effects of parental education on excess weight gain and overweight/obesity among children. The findings showed that the prenatal and early postnatal factors played a significant mediating role in excess weight gain at 2 years, while both prenatal and early postnatal factors and child energy balance-related behaviours contributed to overweight/obesity at 5, 8, and 14 years. These findings indicate potential targets for interventions to address socioeconomic inequalities in overweight/obesity from birth to adolescence.

Summary: We evaluated the exposure-health relationship of mycotoxins in humans by reviewing available literature. Since human studies did not provide clear evidence of chronic health effects, we used the AOP framework to gather mechanistic evidence from in vitro and animal studies.
