Summary: By employing a co-assembly strategy with quinone and polyamine building blocks, we have developed a method to precisely control the structure and properties of coatings on various materials, including thickness, adhesion, wettability, and zeta potential. The properties of the films can be tuned by increasing the length of the amine building blocks, and the films can be post-functionalized to form diverse nanostructures for various applications.

Summary: A nano-elemental selenium particle (CSA-SeNP) is developed for cartilage repair, which can promote chondrocyte proliferation, increase cartilage thickness, and improve the ultrastructure of chondrocytes and organelles. It enhances the expression of chondroitin sulfate 4-O sulfotransferase to repair cartilage lesions and is less toxic than Na2SeO3, showing outstanding repair effects in rats.

Summary: In this study, an artificial CS subtype CS B was chosen as the functional molecule to prepare a functionalized surface on the polydopamine (PDA)/hexanediamine (HD) co-deposited stent. Comparing with the natural CS subtype CS A, CS B showed stronger functions on inhibiting adhesion of whole blood composition, reducing thrombosis, and improving lumen patency and blood flow, as well as directing the fate of vascular cells effectively. It was found that the conjugated CS B obtained a complete endothelial monolayer within 30 days, while the main natural subtype of CS, CS A, didn't contribute to the formation of endothelial monolayer, indicating the superior potential of CS B in regulating the cardiovascular cells behaviors.

Summary: The negative charge of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) allows them to form complexes with positively charged biomolecules and ions, regulating homeostatic functions. Copying these interactions enables the assembly of biofunctional devices with unprecedented biocompliance. However, there are challenges in complexing GAG into intricate three-dimensional networks.

Summary: VAR2CSA is a Plasmodium falciparum variant surface antigen that causes placental malaria by binding infected erythrocytes to chondroitin sulfate A. The high polymorphism in VAR2CSA sequences hampers the development of a broadly neutralizing vaccine. Recent research reveals that a human monoclonal antibody called PAM1.4 binds to conserved residues of different VAR2CSA subfragments, indicating its potential for broad reactivity. Understanding the critical residues within the PAM1.4 binding epitope of VAR2CSA can help identify similar epitopes targeted by broadly neutralizing antibodies and decipher the immune evasion mechanisms employed by placenta-binding parasites through VAR2CSA polymorphism.

Summary: The behavior of hydrophobically modified chondroitin sulfate (CS) in aqueous media and the drug accumulation inside the formed micelle-like structures were studied. The results show that with increasing degree of substitution (DS), the morphology of the structures changes from irregular nanogels to cylindrical micelles with a core-shell architecture.

Summary: The self-assembling behavior of peptides and derivatives plays a crucial role in constructing architectures and achieving specific functions in nature. However, the surface or interfacial self-assembly, especially on micro- or nanoparticles, has been less systematically studied. In this study, uniform porous CaCO3 micro particles with different surfaces were used to investigate the self-assembling behavior of dipeptides with various sequences. The experimental results showed that dipeptides with a negative charge preferentially self-assembled on the hydrophobic and positively charged surface of CaCO3 particles, and dipeptides with high Log p values had a significant effect on the self-assembling behavior on the surface of porous CaCO3.

Summary: A pH/temperature dual-responsive blood vessel was constructed by crosslinking acellular matrix with oxidized chondroitin sulfate (OCSA), allowing for controllable long-term adenosine secretion. The adenosine release was controlled by enzymes (apyrase and acid phosphatase) that responded to acidity and temperature of vascular inflammation sites in real-time. The double crosslinking preserved the ultrastructure for degradation resistance and accelerated endothelialization. This work suggests a promising strategy for achieving long-term patency in transplanted blood vessels.

Summary: Zein-quercetagetin-chondroitin sulfate (Zein-Que-CS) composite nanoparticles with different compositions were successfully fabricated using a novel antisolvent co-precipitation method. The addition of chondroitin sulfate increased the particle diameter, surface potential, and turbidity of the Zein-Que nanoparticles. Electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic attraction played important roles in the formation of the composite nanoparticles. The encapsulated quercetagetin showed improved photostability, thermal stability, resistance to sedimentation, and slow-release properties.
