Fish processing facilities generate a significant amount of fish by-products that could be an important source of energy, food, or industrial feedstock. While fish oil is a natural source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (mostly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) used in nutritional supplements, the ability to extract, refine, and get to market of these oils may be challenging at processing facilities where there is limited infrastructure and plants are remotely located. Under these conditions, extraction of oil from fish by-product for use as an in-house or regional fuel may be both economically and environmentally be a more sustainable approach. Processes to extract and refine fish oil for fuel are less energy intensive than the processes for nutritional quality oils and do not require the stringent product specifications and approval process as in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Unlike food crops, extraction of oil from fish residue does not negatively impact food production. This paper presents an overview of developments made in fish oil extraction methodologies including physical, chemical and biological processes. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis of a Renewable, Waste-Derived Nonisocyanate Polyurethane from Fish Processing Discards and Cashew Nutshell-Derived Amines

Courtney M. Laprise, Kelly A. Hawboldt, Francesca M. Kerton, Christopher M. Kozak

Summary: Waste-derived fish oil can be epoxidized and reacted with CO(2) to produce a cyclic carbonate containing material, which can further lead to the formation of nonisocyanate polyurethane materials when reacted with a bioderived amine. The synthesized products are characterized using various spectroscopic and analytical techniques. This process provides a sustainable solution for waste management by utilizing underutilized resources to produce valuable materials.

Sulfate removal using colloid-enhanced ultrafiltration: performance evaluation and adsorption studies

Weiyun Lin, Baiyu Zhang, Xudong Ye, Kelly Hawboldt

Summary: Colloid-enhanced ultrafiltration (CEUF), including micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) and polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF), has shown promising potential in removing sulfate ions from aqueous solutions. PEUF has advantages over MEUF in terms of higher retention, cleaner effluent, and higher adsorption capacity, but faces challenges of severer flux decline and membrane fouling. Membranes with higher molecular weight cut-off can be used to overcome these disadvantages.

Simulation of sour-oxic-nitrite chemical environment in oil and gas facilities

Abdulhaqq Ibrahim, Kelly Hawboldt, Christina Bottaro, Faisal Khan

Summary: The nature of the chemical environment in oil and gas fluids, such as produced water and soured oil, plays a crucial role in microbiologically influenced corrosion. The study investigates the effects of sulphide and nitrite chemistry on the corrosion potential and microbial relationships within the system. Equilibrium and kinetic models provide insights into the formation of corrosion products and the impact of nitrate on the system's chemistry and microbial activity.

A review on sources and extraction of phenolic compounds as precursors for bio-based phenolic resins

Mahsan Basafa, Kelly Hawboldt

Summary: Residues from biomass processing/harvesting can be converted to high-value chemicals and fuels through pyrolysis. Pyrolysis oils derived from lignocellulosic biomass, particularly hemp residues, have potential as sources of bio-phenols. The extraction and recovery of phenolic compounds from pyrolysis oils require further investigation for optimizing pre-treatment, extraction, and analytical techniques. Considerable progress has been made in producing cost-effective renewable phenolic resins, but challenges remain in achieving satisfactory quality and low cost.

Biosurfactant production by native marine bacteria (Acinetobacter calcoaceticus P1-1A) using waste carbon sources: Impact of process conditions

Bahareh Moshtagh, Kelly Hawboldt, Baiyu Zhang

Summary: This study demonstrates the cost-effective production of biosurfactants using waste substrates and optimized cultural conditions. By using waste cooking oil as the sole carbon source, a biosurfactant with high stability in thermal, pH, and salinity conditions was successfully produced. The combination of indigenous bacteria and no-cost carbon sources from waste shows great promise in reducing production costs and producing biosurfactants tailored for harsh environments like the North Atlantic.

Gasification kinetics of chars from diverse residues under suitable conditions for the Sorption Enhanced Gasification process

G. Grasa, I. Martinez, R. Murillo

Summary: Gasification kinetics of six chars from residual origin were studied under relatively low temperature, low CO2, and high H2O partial pressures. The Random Pore Model (RPM) showed the best fit to experimental results, but the selection of the reaction model depended on the ash composition, specifically the presence of alkali and alkaline earth metals. Chars with ash content higher than 30% wt. were modeled with the RPM model, while chars with the highest K/Si ratio required modified versions of the RPM to accurately predict reaction rates. Textural properties played a key role in determining reaction parameters, such as the pre-exponential factor and activation energy, for chars with similar ash content and composition.
