Summary: Enzymatic and nonenzymatic oxidation of linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) during pressing and storage of plant oils leads to the formation of various oxylipins. The concentrations of oxylipins are found to be correlated with the peroxide value (PV) of the oils, while secondary volatile aldehydes do not show similar correlations. Comprehensive analysis of different types of hydroxy-, epoxy-, and dihydroxy-LA/-ALA provides new insights into the composition of plant oils and ongoing oxidation processes.

Summary: Plants and soil microbes can reduce their phosphorus requirements by replacing phospholipids with non-phosphorus lipids in response to phosphorus deficiency. However, there have been few studies on this process in natural ecosystems, making it unclear whether this replacement occurs across soil phosphorus availability gradients.

Summary: Massive changes in diet have led to an imbalance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, mainly due to the increased consumption of omega-6-rich vegetable oils and depletion of omega-3 in our food. Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding the effects of omega-3 and omega-6 on glucose metabolism, with factors such as source of omega-3, sample size, ethnicity, study duration, and food cooking method playing a role. A high EPA/AA ratio appears to be a promising indicator of better glycemic control and reduced inflammation, while linoleic acid may also be associated with a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Summary: A sensitive and accurate lipidomic method was developed to identify and quantify phospholipids in plasma. The method successfully determined 31 molecular species of phospholipids and identified 10 biomarkers that showed significant differences between different subtypes of stroke and healthy controls. The study also found that oleic acid-enriched phospholipids were positively related to stroke and may be potential risk factors in the future.

Summary: Autism is associated with changes in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels, suggesting a link between lipid metabolism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, phospholipid distribution in the brain tissue of autistic mice was investigated using MALDI-MSI, revealing differences in phospholipids containing important PUFAs for cell signaling and brain growth. The identification of these differences will contribute to a better understanding of changes in lipid metabolism in ASD, when combined with traditional biological fluid analysis.

Summary: Hirudin, a natural substance found in leeches, has both therapeutic and toxic effects. This study proposes a new method for detecting hirudin in serum using affinity magnetic microspheres. The method combines liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis to achieve accurate detection. The method has a low limit of detection, good linearity, and acceptable precision.

Summary: Liver cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounting for over 90% of cases. This study optimized a mass spectrometry technique called rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) for analyzing HCC tumor tissue. Through the analysis of 12 human HCC tumor tissue specimens, it was found that certain free fatty acids and phospholipids were distributed differently in HCC, paracancerous tissue (PT), and noncancerous liver tissue (NCT). The upregulation of specific fatty acids and phospholipids was identified in HCC specimens, and a statistical model was established for real-time HCC tumor diagnosis with high sensitivity and specificity.

Summary: Analysis of triacylglycerol (TG) and phospholipid sn-positional isomers can be done through direct separation or quantification of regioisomer ratios using mass spectrometry. Direct chromatography separation is being replaced by mass spectrometry due to limitations. However, challenges arise from the large number of isobaric and isomeric lipid species in natural samples and the lack of available regiopure standards. Optimization algorithms and fragmentation models are useful for analysis of TG regioisomers.

Summary: Shrimp waste is a rich source of bioactive lipids, and the 1,2-dichloroethane method for extracting phospholipids shows comparable results to traditional methods. Different extraction methods significantly impact the lipidomics profile of the shrimp waste extract, but the diversity and percentage of molecular species remain generally consistent.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of salt cations in sea spray aerosols (SSAs) on the ozonolysis of model lung phospholipids at the air-water interface. The results show that salt cations facilitate the interfacial ozonolysis of phospholipids, and this facilitation is dependent on the concentration, charge number, and ion radius of the salt cations. The mechanism study reveals that the electrostatic interaction between the phospholipids and the salt cations disrupts the packing of the phospholipids, making the oleyl chains more susceptible to ozone. The aerosolization of salt-dominated artificial seawater and real seawater also demonstrates a significant increase in the ozonolysis of phospholipids intervened by salt cations.

Summary: NdgR, a global regulator in Streptomyces, regulates branched-chain amino acid metabolism by binding to synthetic genes. Its function was studied using PLFA analysis, which showed that ndgR deletion decreased isoleucine- and leucine-related fatty acids but increased valine-related fatty acids. This deletion also impaired growth at low temperatures, but supplementation of leucine and isoleucine could restore growth. NdgR was found to be involved in the control of branched-chain amino acids and membrane fatty acid composition.
