We apply our technique on the dispersion of magnetic fields in molecular clouds to high spatial resolution Submillimeter Array polarization data obtained for Orion KL in OMC-1, IRAS 16293, and NGC 1333 IRAS 4A. We show how one can take advantage of such high-resolution data to characterize the magnetized turbulence power spectrum in the inertial and dissipation ranges. For Orion KL we determine that in the inertial range the spectrum can be approximately fitted with a power law k(-(2.9 +/- 0.9)) and we report a value of 9.9 mpc for lambda(AD), the high spatial frequency cutoff presumably due to turbulent ambipolar diffusion. For the same parameters we have similar to k(-(1.4 +/- 0.4)) and a tentative value of lambda(AD) similar or equal to 2.2 mpc for NGC 1333 IRAS 4A, and similar to k(-(1.8 +/- 0.3)) with an upper limit of lambda(AD) less than or similar to 1.8 mpc for IRAS 16293. We also discuss the application of the technique to interferometry measurements and the effects of the inherent spatial filtering process on the interpretation of the results.

Summary: This study aims to understand the role of magnetic fields in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 filament network with cluster-forming hubs. Observations show a complex B-field structure across the region, while exhibiting coherent variations along the filament crests. Variations in polarization properties along sub-filaments may trace the evolution of physical properties during interactions with ridges and hubs. Feedback from young high-mass stars impacts the local B-field structure and polarization properties, shedding light on the interplay between star formation activity and interstellar B-fields.

Summary: Researchers explored the effects of synchrotron radiation from hot gas near a black hole on image polarization using a simple model. By comparing the model with general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of M87*, they found that the ring model broadly reproduces the polarimetric image morphology. This comparison is consistent with the clockwise rotation inferred from total intensity images, suggesting that the chosen parameters in the model are suitable.

Constraints on the Mass Accretion Rate onto the Supermassive Black Hole of Cygnus A Using the Submillimeter Array

Summary: Polarimetric studies of Cygnus A at 230 GHz using the Submillimeter Array provided constraints on the mass accretion rate onto its supermassive black hole. The low fractional polarization of the detected emission suggests high depolarization, potentially due to significant variance in Faraday rotation measure. The derived constraint indicates the need for an adiabatic inflow-outflow solution or advection-dominated accretion flow model to explain the jet power of Cygnus A.

Does the Magnetic Field Suppress Fragmentation in Massive Dense Cores?

Summary: Theoretical and numerical studies suggest that a strong magnetic field can suppress fragmentation in dense cores, but this has not been observationally tested in a large sample. By studying 18 massive dense cores, a strong correlation is found between fragmentation level and the average density of the parental core.

Summary: The observations by the Event Horizon Telescope revealed important features of polarized emission around the supermassive black hole in M87, including disturbances in the polarization structure and a possible azimuthal linear polarization pattern formed by organized magnetic fields. This suggests insights into the structure of magnetic fields and plasma near the black hole, with implications for understanding the emission mechanisms and properties of the radiating plasma.

Summary: The variability of black hole images obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope is explored in this study. Closure-phase measurements are used to analyze the day-to-day variability in different baseline triangles formed from the 2017 observations. The study finds that the variability is low in certain triangles and high in those crossing the visibility amplitude minima. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations are used to investigate the dependence of the variability on various parameters, and the fractional width of the bright ring of emission is identified as the most distinguishing characteristic of the models.

Summary: The Event Horizon Telescope observed the compact radio source, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in the Galactic Center and found its variability on short timescales of up to 1 minute at millimeter wavelengths. The spectral energy distribution of Sgr A* is flat at 220 GHz, indicating low optical depth for the event horizon scale source.

Summary: This study presents new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr metric based on observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) using the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope. The authors calibrate the relationship between the black hole shadow and the observed size of ring-like images using both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. They conclude that the observed image size is within similar to 10% of the Kerr predictions and use these bounds to constrain alternative metrics and charges of spacetimes. The study also explores the possibility of Sgr A* being a compact object with a thermal or reflective surface and compares the results to other gravitational tests.

Summary: This paper quantifies the temporal variability and image morphology of the horizon-scale emission from Sgr A* observed by the EHT in 2017. It finds that the data exhibit significant variability exceeding uncertainties and scattering effects. Geometric ring models provide better fits to the data, and the diameter and thickness of the ring are determined through modeling and image-domain analysis techniques.

Summary: This study presents and analyzes observations of polarized dust emission in Mon R2. The magnetic field orientations in Mon R2 follow its spiral structure, and the turbulent component of the magnetic field is estimated using a model. The strength and mass-to-flux ratio of the magnetic field are calculated, revealing the importance of the magnetic field in resisting gravitational collapse in Mon R2.

The HH 24 Complex: Jets, Multiple Star Formation, and Orphaned Protostars

Summary: The HH 24 complex contains five collimated jets from a small protostellar multiple system. A multi-wavelength study using data from various telescopes reveals that the system contains at least 7 sources ranging in mass from the hydrogen-burning limit to proto-Herbig Ae stars. The study also shows that the system is in an unstable non-hierarchical configuration, with one member moving away from the protostellar system after being ejected as an orphaned protostar.

Testing the Linear Relationship between Black Hole Mass and Variability Timescale in Low-luminosity AGNs at Submillimeter Wavelengths

Bo-Yan Chen, Geoffrey C. Bower, Jason Dexter, Sera Markoff, Anthony Ridenour, Mark A. Gurwell, Ramprasad Rao, Sofia H. J. Wallstrom

Summary: The variability of submillimeter emission can be used to study the accretion physics in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. By analyzing observations of various galaxies, we detect characteristic timescales for the variability, indicating a correlation with black hole mass. This suggests that submillimeter emission originates from the event horizon and sources following this mass scaling relationship may be suitable for high-resolution imaging with the Event Horizon Telescope.

Summary: The lower-energy peak of the spectral energy distribution in blazars is believed to be caused by synchrotron radiation from relativistic particles in the jets. However, the particle acceleration mechanism is still debated. In this study, the first X-ray polarization observations of PG 1553+113 were presented, revealing a smooth rotation of the optical angle and providing further evidence for shock-accelerated and energy-stratified electron population.

Summary: The IXPE satellite observed a shock passing through the jet of Markarian 421 in June 2022, revealing a helical magnetic field. The rotation of the X-ray-polarized radiation over a 5-day period indicated the presence of a helical magnetic structure in the jet. This rotation was unlikely to be produced by a stochastic process and was not observed in data at longer wavelengths.
