Summary: This study summarized the efficacy and safety of ribavirin for the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) associated lower respiratory tract infections. The results showed that ribavirin is effective in treating RSV-LRTI in patients with hematological diseases, and oral ribavirin is associated with increased viral clearance. However, there is a lack of evidence to support its use in lung transplant recipients.

They were more likely to have cardiopulmonary comorbidities, experience a longer stay, and require mechanical ventilation. Summary: This study aimed to quantify the relationship between increasing influenza and RSV community viral activity and cardiorespiratory rehospitalizations among older adults discharged to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). The results showed that cardiorespiratory rehospitalization rates increased by approximately 1% for every 5% increase in circulating influenza A(H3N2), influenza B, and RSV, but decreased by 1% for every 5% increase in circulating influenza A(H1N1pdm09). During the respiratory virus season, cardiorespiratory rehospitalization rates increased by approximately 6% for influenza A(H3N2), 3% for influenza B, and 5% for RSV, but decreased by 6% for influenza A(H1N1pdm09).

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in hospitalized children. RSV-positive children were more likely to be hospitalized, require intensive care unit admission, and receive oxygen compared with children positive for other viruses. Higher viral load, White race, younger age, and higher severity score were independently associated with hospitalization in RSV-positive children.

Summary: The study found that over 50% of intubated patients with severe COVID-19 had myocardial injury, which was associated with a higher mortality rate. Myocardial injury in COVID-19 was closely related to baseline comorbidities, age, and multisystem organ dysfunction. Compared with ARDS patients without COVID-19, COVID-19 patients were older and had poorer cardiac function, but had a lower incidence of myocardial injury.

Summary: Neutrophilic inflammation is observed in respiratory viral infections, including COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome, but its role in disease pathogenesis is unclear. This study phenotyped immune cells in the blood and airway of 52 severe COVID-19 patients and identified two subpopulations of neutrophils. The loss of one neutrophil subset correlated with increased viral burden and decreased survival. Further experiments showed that this subset exhibited an antiviral response, which was dependent on type I interferon signaling. Understanding this neutrophil phenotype could lead to new therapeutic approaches for viral illnesses.
