Summary: Recent research examined the relationship between neurological soft signs (NSS) and various variables in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. The study found that NSS were negatively associated with years of education and increased with age. Additionally, BD type I patients had higher NSS scores compared to BD type II patients. NSS were also correlated with lower premorbid IQ and poorer performance in attention, language, and executive functions. However, when included in a multiple regression model, NSS did not significantly contribute to functional outcomes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of BD type, stage, and the history of psychotic symptoms (HoPS) on the severity of neurological and cerebellar soft signs (NSS and CSS). The results showed that staging was closely related to CSS and NSS scores, while the history of psychotic symptoms was associated with oculomotor deficits. The study found that late-stage BD had more severe CSS and NSS than the control group, while early-stage BD only showed differences in posture and gait disturbances compared to the control group.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between verbal memory and semantic clustering in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The results showed that patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder performed worse in verbal memory compared to healthy controls, and semantic clustering had a limited impact on the relationship between verbal memory and functioning in these disorders.

Summary: The study found significant associations between neurological soft signs and auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia patients, but not with delusions. The integration function of neurological soft signs was positively correlated with the severity of auditory verbal hallucinations. This suggests important interrelationships between sensorimotor integration abilities, brain structure and function, and auditory verbal hallucination symptom expression.

Summary: The study revealed correlations between neurological soft signs (NSS) and cerebellar-cerebral resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in schizophrenia patients, suggesting a link with negative symptoms. The uncoupling of rsFC between the cerebellum and prefrontal regions may underlie the expression of NSS and provide a potential neural pathway for alleviating negative symptoms.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the differences in neurological soft signs (NSS) and neurocognitive disorders (ND) among euthymic patients with bipolar disorder, their unaffected first-degree relatives, and healthy controls. The results suggest that motor coordination, information processing speed, verbal learning, and working memory may be internal characteristics of bipolar disorder.

Summary: The study revealed a low overlap between different assessment tools for neurological soft signs, which limits reproducibility and hinders the unification of knowledge from existing data. The diversity in NSS assessment tools suggests the need for further research on the non-localizable nature of NSS.

Summary: This study investigates the association between neurological soft signs (NSS) and brain structure alterations in physically trained adolescents. The results show that adolescents with NSS have higher gyrification in specific brain regions and lower fractional anisotropy (FAt) and higher axial and radial diffusivity (ADt, RDt) in widespread areas. This suggests that NSS in adolescents are associated with brain structure alterations.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is often overlooked and misunderstood by clinicians, despite being a common and accurately diagnosable condition based on clinical signs. People with FND face discrimination from healthcare providers, researchers, and the public, reflecting the neglect of disorders primarily affecting women. We argue that FND is a feminist issue, drawing on historical and contemporary perspectives from clinical, research, and social domains. We call for equal attention and support for FND in medical education, research, and clinical services to ensure adequate care for those affected.

Summary: The significance of neurological soft signs (NSS) in major depressive disorder (MDD) is unclear, and no research has been conducted on the stability of NSS in relation to antidepressant treatment. This study aimed to investigate whether NSS are stable trait markers of MDD and to test the hypothesis that MDD patients show more NSS than healthy controls, regardless of illness duration and antidepressant treatment. The findings showed that both chronically depressed, medicated MDD patients and acutely depressed, unmedicated MDD patients exhibited more NSS than healthy controls, and there was no change in NSS after a series of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) sessions.

Summary: Neurological soft signs are possible indicators of abnormal neurodevelopment and neural connectivity. They are not exclusive to schizophrenia, but they appear to be a trait characteristic in psychosis and can serve as an objective measure for serious psychiatric disorder assessment. Neurocognitive deficits may contribute to the construct of NSS, and they may help identify individuals at risk of developing schizophrenia later in life.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the short-term outcome of functional neurological disorders (FND) in Indian children and adolescents. The results showed that scholastic and family problems were common psychosocial factors. After nine months, 73% of the patients achieved remission, while the reasons for non-remission were the persistence of psychosocial factors and psychiatric comorbidities.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the brain functional correlates of psychosocial functioning in individuals with bipolar disorder during a working memory task. The results revealed differences in brain activation between bipolar patients and healthy controls, particularly in the medial frontal cortex. In addition, the study found inverse correlations between psychosocial functioning and brain activation in several cortical regions, including the frontal, parietal, and temporo-occipital regions.
