Biofilters are packed-bed bioreactors where contaminants, once transferred from the gas phase to the biofilm, are oxidized by diverse and complex communities of attached microorganisms. Over the last decade, more and more studies aimed at opening the back box of biofiltration by unraveling the biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship. In this review, we report the insights provided by the microbial ecology approach in biofilters and we emphasize the parallels existing with other engineered ecosystems used for wastewater treatment, as they all constitute relevant model ecosystems to explore ecological issues. We considered three characteristic ecological indicators: the density, the diversity, and the structure of the microbial community. Special attention was paid to the temporal and spatial dynamics of each indicator, insofar as it can disclose the potential relationship, or absence of relation, with any operating or functional parameter. We also focused on the impact of disturbance regime on the microbial community structure, in terms of resistance, resilience, and memory. This literature review led to mitigated conclusions in terms of biodiversity-ecosystem function relationship. Depending on the environmental system itself and the way it is investigated, the spatial and temporal dynamics of the microbial community can be either correlated (e.g., spatial stratification) or uncoupled (e.g., temporal instability) to the ecosystem function. This lack of generality shows the limits of current 16S approach in complex ecosystems, where a functional approach may be more suitable.

Ecosystem maturity modulates greenhouse gases fluxes from artificial lakes

Fanny Colas, Jean-Marc Baudoin, Patricia Bonin, Lea Cabrol, Martin Daufresne, Remy Lassus, Julien Cucherousset

Summary: The study found that as artificial lakes mature, their metabolism shifts from heterotrophic to autotrophic, making them CO2 sinks but increasing CH4 emissions. Eutrophication may reverse lakes' contribution to climate carbon budgets, but also raises CH4 emissions, enhancing their climate impact. Mitigation strategies to maintain intermediate maturity levels are needed to limit artificial waterbodies' climate impacts.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems play a significant role in methane emissions and this study investigated the effects of temperature on microbial community structure and methane production pathways in sub-Antarctic lake sediments. The research found that temperature had a significant impact on methane production rates, particularly when methanogenic precursors such as acetate and H-2/CO2 were introduced.

Exploring the Microdiversity Within Marine Bacterial Taxa: Toward an Integrated Biogeography in the Southern Ocean

Summary: This study presents a new approach to unravel bacterial phylogeographic patterns in the oceans, combining community-wide survey by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding and intra-species resolution through the oligotyping method. The research focused on the bacterial genus Spirochaeta in the Southern Ocean, revealing genetic differentiation and phylogeographic structure among distant biogeographic provinces. The findings suggest the Antarctic Polar Front as a barrier to bacterial dispersal and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current as the main driver of gene flow, with historical processes governing spatial turnover among Spirochaeta populations.

Similar Methanogenic Shift but Divergent Syntrophic Partners in Anaerobic Digesters Exposed to Direct versus Successive Ammonium Additions

Summary: This study compared two different strategies for acclimating the anaerobic digestion microbiome to increasing ammonium concentration. Results suggest that long-term cumulative exposure to ammonia disrupted the microbiome more strongly than direct (independent) ammonium additions. Different bioindicators with varying NH4+ tolerance capacity were identified among VFA producers and syntrophic VFA oxidizers.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is an attractive bioprocess for waste treatment and energy recovery. This study investigates the potential of microbial inoculum from Antarctic soils and sediments to operate anaerobic digestion at low temperatures. The results show that the Antarctic inoculum has a higher methane production rate than the mesophilic sludge at low temperatures.

Summary: As global warming increases the availability of permafrost organic carbon, methane-cycling becomes increasingly important in high-latitude ecosystems. This study examined samples from three high-latitude regions and found that physicochemical properties, especially pH, played a significant role in shaping the microbial communities involved in methane production and consumption. Geographic distance also influenced the diversity of these microorganisms, with dispersal limitation playing a role. Indicator species were identified to characterize different ecological niches. This research provides insight into the distribution of methane-cycling microbes in high latitudes under climate change predictions.
