Noncovalent Bonding Caught in Action: From Amorphous to Cocrystalline Molecular Thin Films

Olga Chovnik, Sidney R. Cohen, Iddo Pinkas, Lothar Houben, Tatiana E. Gorelik, Yishay Feldman, Linda J. W. Shimon, Mark A. Iron, Michal Lahav, Milko E. Van der Boom

Summary: The study demonstrates the solvent-free amorphous-to-cocrystalline transformations of nanoscale molecular films, showing that the process involves gradual strengthening of halogen-bonding interactions. In addition, mass transport during gas-solid diffusion and the rigidity of the amorphous films play important roles in the crystallization process.

Fluorophore spectroscopy in aqueous glycerol solution: the interactions of glycerol with the fluorophore

Haim Feldman, Mark A. Iron, Dror Fixler, Sergei Moshkov, Naomi Zurgil, Elena Afrimzon, Mordechai Deutsch

Summary: This study challenges the common perception of glycerol providing an inert-like environment and investigates its effects on the spectroscopic properties of fluorescein. The presence of glycerol was found to significantly impact the fluorescence characteristics of fluorescein, altering quantum yield, fluorescence lifetime, absorption and emission spectra. Computational chemistry predictions corresponded to experimental results, suggesting that glycerol is not an innocent medium in aqueous solutions.

Summary: This study reports the discovery and mechanistic studies of three-coordinate iron(II) catalysts for ring-opening metathesis polymerization of olefins. The iron catalysts exhibited high reactivity and polymerization ability, suggesting their potential as economical and biocompatible catalysts for olefin metathesis reactions.

The GlycoPaSER Prototype as a Real-Time N-Glycopeptide Identification Tool Based on the PaSER Parallel Computing Platform

Gad Armony, Sven Brehmer, Tharan Srikumar, Lennard Pfennig, Fokje Zijlstra, Dennis Trede, Gary Kruppa, Dirk J. Lefeber, Alain J. van Gool, Hans J. C. T. Wessels

Summary: Real-time database searching simplifies and automates proteomics workflows and eliminates technical bottlenecks. It enables results-dependent acquisition (RDA), which is especially beneficial for glycoproteomics due to the wide range of optimal acquisition parameters. The GlycoPaSER prototype presented here provides the first proof-of-concept for real-time glycopeptide identification and unlocks the future development of RDA technology.
