Summary: The management of food and food-related wastes is a critical global issue due to their difficulty in recycling and disposal. Waste can be utilized as a significant source of biomass, with particular attention on fat-enriched biomasses for biofuel production. In this study, the focus was on evaluating a protocol for fractioning fatty acids from lanolin, a natural by-product of sheep shearing, and developing a fast quantitative GC-MS method for derivatizing free fatty acids in fat mixtures using MethElute (TM). Additionally, the separation of aliphatic and hydroxylated fatty acids in lanolin was assessed using NMR spectroscopy. The qualitative and quantitative analyses showed successful separation of different acid components, revealing that alpha-hydroxylated fatty acids primarily consist of linear saturated carbon chains, while other fatty acids exhibit a more complex profile.

Summary: Finding alternative antibacterial drugs is crucial due to bacterial resistance. Algae, such as Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum, have bioactive constituents with antibacterial implications. In this study, extracts of R. hieroglyphicum were tested against pathogenic bacteria, showing potent antibacterial activity. The ethanolic extract exhibited the strongest effect, mainly due to the presence of fatty acids. R. hieroglyphicum could be a promising source for the development of antibacterial agents.

Summary: The study analysed the changes in chemical composition of macroalgae in the White Sea during the growing season. It found increased levels of polyphenols, pigments, and saturated fatty acids, likely due to solar activity, photosynthesis, and higher seawater temperature. August was identified as the optimal month to harvest macroalgae with valuable chemical compounds, and specific species were recommended for isolating different components. Compared to macroalgae from Europe, the Far East, and Southeast Asia, the White Sea species showed high potential as a new source of lipophilic substances and cellulose.

Summary: The hindgut microbial community of Kyphosus sydneyanus plays an important role in nutrition and health, with functional compartmentalization observed in different gut regions. The microbiota convert dietary carbohydrates into metabolically useful short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and their abundance correlates with specific SCFA concentrations in different gut sections.

Summary: Despite being widely present and having considerable biomass, the specific roles of parasites in aquatic food webs, particularly their free-living infectious stages like cercariae, remain unclear. This study found that cercariae could potentially transfer crucial polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to consumers, indicating their importance in nutrient and energy transfer within aquatic ecosystems. Despite changes in snail diets, the levels of certain PUFA were largely unaffected, with trematode-containing snail tissue displaying higher PUFA levels compared to snail-only tissue, suggesting the potential for trophic transfer of key nutrients.

Summary: The two-stage model with high CO2 induction is an effective approach for the production of biodiesel and PUFA from Skeletonema costatum, suitable for both biofuel and health care markets. High CO2 levels enhance the synthesis of PUFA and increase lipid productivity, although 5% CO2 level is more beneficial compared to 10% CO2 level.
