Summary: This study analyzed 314,004 COVID-19 patients and found that individuals with cancer, especially those diagnosed within 1 year and receiving treatment, had higher risks for worse COVID-19 outcomes, including 30-day mortality and hospitalization.

Summary: The paper discusses a conceptual model for EHR implementation of quality measures, successfully implemented a depression screening quality measure in a home-based medical care setting. Additional components of early leadership, clinician buy-in, strong IT relationships, and simplified implementation processes were necessary for success.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the effects of patient-centered digital health records on patients with chronic conditions and found that they have significant beneficial effects on health care utilization, treatment adherence, and self-management or self-efficacy. However, more high-quality studies are needed to draw firm conclusions.

Summary: Transgender individuals have the right to be referred to by their chosen names. However, the current electronic health record (EHR) system lacks the capability to accurately and sensitively document the experiences of transgender patients, despite recent improvements. This article suggests modifying EHRs to include separate fields for legal and chosen names, acknowledging the diverse experiences and needs of transgender patients, and advocating for inclusive and identity-sensitive healthcare. Healthcare professionals should advocate for technology that respects the full humanity of their patients.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the relationship between EHR use and provider burnout and found that insufficient time for documentation, high inbox or patient call message volumes, and negative perceptions of EHR by providers are the three most cited EHR-related factors associated with higher rates of provider burnout.

Summary: Using electronic health records, a pragmatic and parsimonious multivariable model was developed to predict 90-day mortality in patients hospitalized with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The model, based on a small number of variables including age, sex, length of hospital stay, prior diagnosis, prescription, and laboratory data, showed excellent calibration and reasonable discrimination. The risk-calculator can be useful for service-evaluation, clinical management, risk-stratification, and patient selection for clinical research.

Summary: This study considers the suitability of using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) from a large health system to study local children's health. The findings suggest that EHRs can be used to assess children's population health, but account for differences in census tract characteristics that affect who is captured by the EHRs.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety of the third dose of FDA-approved COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. The findings suggest that although the third dose is associated with an increased reporting of low-severity adverse events, the risk of severe adverse events remains comparable to the standard two-dose regime. This study provides evidence for the safety of third vaccination doses in eligible individuals for booster vaccination.

Summary: This study demonstrates that utilizing EHR data in conjunction with modern methodologic approaches, such as the Bayesian joint phenotyping and BMI trajectory model, can enhance the efficiency and timeliness of studies on childhood exposures and rare health outcomes. The findings indicate that the age at adiposity rebound between 5 and 9 years is associated with higher odds of type 2 diabetes in adolescence compared to the age at rebound between 2 and 5 years, and that BMI exceeding 140% of the 95th percentile at age 9 years is linked to higher odds of type 2 diabetes in adolescence compared to children with BMI between 100 and 120% of the 95th percentile.

Summary: Electronic health records were not originally developed to support the Learning Health System, and differ in data collection and processing from population health registries. Establishing a formal registry mapped to a common data model allows for customized data mapping and ease of sharing with other institutions.
