Motivational state has been found to influence visual attentional bias and evaluation of food-related stimuli. The study here aimed to extend this research to investigate whether such biases are also evident in the auditory domain and whether motivational state is associated with changes in the implicit evaluation of food words. Thirty participants, randomly allocated to a pre-lunch or post-lunch condition completed a dichotic listening task (DLT) and implicit association test (LAT). For the IAT, participants in the pre-lunch group were slower to associate food with unpleasant words than the post-lunch group, but motivational state did not affect detection of food words in the DLT. These findings suggest that implicit attitudes toward food can vary with motivational state. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Associations Between Self-reported Inhibitory Control, Stress, and Alcohol (Mis)use During the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the UK: a National Cross-sectional Study Utilising Data From Four Birth Cohorts

James M. Clay, Lorenzo D. Stafford, Matthew O. Parker

Summary: This study explored self-reported changes in alcohol use during the pandemic in the UK and examined the association between self-reported inhibitory control and/or stress with changes in drinking behavior. The findings showed that a significant minority of individuals in the 30- and 50-year-old age groups reported drinking more, and a considerable percentage of respondents reported feeling more stressed. Stress was associated with hazardous drinking among 30-year-olds, impatience was associated with increased alcohol use and hazardous drinking among 19-year-olds, and risk-taking was associated with hazardous drinking for 30-year-olds. These data highlight concerns for individuals at risk of alcohol misuse and alcohol-related harm during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Summary: The aim of the study was to develop a concise psychometric scale to assess athletes' in-competition emotions, which resulted in the development of the Brief In-Competition Emotion (BICE) scale through four studies. The BICE scale consists of five composite emotion factors - anger, anxiety, excitement, dejection, and happiness, and was found to have acceptable levels of concurrent and predictive validity in subsequent studies.

How colour influences taste perception in adult picky eaters

Madison Annette, Lorenzo D. Stafford

Summary: Picky eating is characterized by limited intake and avoidance of certain foods, which can have negative health effects. This study aimed to investigate the influence of color on the perception of food in picky eaters. Results showed that perceived saltiness and desirability of the snack were influenced by color in picky eaters, but not in non-picky eaters. Specifically, the snack was rated as saltier and less desirable when served in red or blue bowls. These findings suggest that the perception of food in picky eaters depends on the color of the serving receptacle and offer potential interventions for those with restricted food preferences.

Mediated and moderated associations between cumulative lifetime stressor exposure, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and lifetime alcohol use: A cross-sectional scoping study of UK drinkers

James M. Clay, Kiera A. Baker, Roxana D. Mezabrovschi, Giacomo Berti, Grant S. Shields, George M. Slavich, Lorenzo D. Stafford, Matthew O. Parker

Summary: Stress, trait impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation independently predict alcohol use and misuse. This study explores the potential mechanisms linking these risk factors and finds that emotional dysregulation fully mediates the relationship between cumulative lifetime stressor exposure and lifetime alcohol use. The study also reveals that different facets of impulsivity moderate these associations, suggesting a complex interplay between these factors.

Summary: This study addresses the lack of research on the subjective experiences of individuals affected by anosmia. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study reveals the challenges faced by anosmic individuals, their recollection of memories and the way they adapt to their condition. It also highlights the lack of public awareness of anosmia, despite its importance in relationships and a sense of identity. The findings provide a rich qualitative account of the anosmic experience and suggest future research directions.

Food fussiness is associated with family environmental factors in 1-3-year-old children: A large-scale cross-sectional study

Hugues Piloquet, Benoit Berge, Pascal Maigret, Veronique Hospital

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of environmental factors on eating behavior and food intake in toddlers. The results showed that food fussiness was more common in older children, children conceived with medical assistance, children exposed to distractions during meals, rewarded by parents to finish meals, free to eat at will, and those who ate only occasionally with the whole family. Unsatisfactory dietary diversification was not significantly associated with any variable.

Summary: The UK's aging population requires promotion of balanced nutrition, with a particular focus on increasing dietary fiber intake. Surveys involving older adults showed their willingness to learn about dietary fiber and the need for accessible information. Educational materials proved effective in engaging older adults and were perceived as useful. A holistic approach, involving support from various sources, can aid in improving dietary fiber consumption and overall health outcomes among older adults.

Reasons for meal termination, eating frequency, and typical meal context differ between persons with and without a spinal cord injury

Gary J. Farkas, Paige M. Cunningham, Alicia M. Sneij, John E. Hayes, Mark S. Nash, Arthur S. Berg, David R. Gater, Barbara J. Rolls

Summary: Overeating associated with neurogenic obesity after spinal cord injury (SCI) may be related to how persons with SCI experience satiation, their eating frequency, and the context in which they eat their meals. Those with SCI rely less on physiological satiation cues for meal termination and instead rely more on hedonic cues. There are differences in meal contexts and eating frequency between SCI individuals and controls, with SCI individuals consuming fewer meals but having a higher overall eating frequency due to increased snacking. These factors likely contribute to overeating associated with neurogenic obesity after SCI.

Sex-specific impulsivity, but not other facets of executive function, predicts fat and sugar intake two-years later amongst adolescents with a healthy weight: Findings from the ABCD study

Shana Adise, Kerri N. Boutelle, Panteha Hayati Rezvan, Eric Kan, Kyung E. Rhee, Michael I. Goran, Elizabeth R. Sowell

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between executive functions and cognition during adolescence, and the intake of fat and sugar two years later. The study found that higher impulsivity and reward-seeking behaviors were related to greater fat and sugar intake in males, while higher negative urgency and BMI were related to greater intake in both sexes. These findings suggest that individuals with certain traits may be more at risk for weight gain due to overconsumption of unhealthy foods.

Australian adults cooked more and tried new recipes during COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns resulted in changes in food accessibility and availability, leading to shifts in food habits and behaviors among people worldwide. A study conducted in Australia examined the self-reported changes in food habits and behaviors of adults during the COVID-19 restrictions in 2020. The majority of respondents reported developing positive food habits, such as trying new recipes, cooking from scratch, and reducing take-away meals. The study also found that family involvement in food preparation and eating together increased during the restrictions. However, there were negative experiences, including difficulties in purchasing certain foods and limited access to food outlets.

Association between sensory reactivity and feeding problems in school-aged children: InProS Study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between sensory reactivity and feeding problems in young children. The results showed that taste/smell sensitivity was significantly associated with difficulties in texture transition/introduction, limited variety of foods, and both feeding problems. Additionally, children with total sensory reactivity or auditory filtering sensory reactivity had a higher prevalence of consuming a limited variety of foods. These findings highlight the importance of considering sensory reactivity as a potential predictor of feeding problems.
