Summary: This study aimed to characterize differences in collagen architecture in 3D spheroid models of IPF under different crosslinking modulation conditions using second-harmonic generation microscopy. The results showed alterations in fiber morphology and structure with crosslink enhancement and inhibition. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of SHG analysis in delineating alterations across collagen architecture sizescales.

Summary: The study found that the crosslinking rate of warmed genipin (w-GE) was higher than intact genipin (n-GE), but the degree of crosslinking of n-GE gels was higher at 12 hours. Additionally, the ISO 10993-5 standard method showed that the equivalent IC50 values for w-GE and n-GE were 0.173 mM and 0.166 mM, respectively. Furthermore, custom-made cytotoxicity tests indicated that the acute cytotoxicity of w-GE was significantly higher than n-GE at concentrations between 0.1-5 mM.

Summary: The study effectively demonstrated the disorganized collagen structure resulting from trypsin and collagenase degradation in cartilage, with collagenase showing the most significant effect. Application of a LD model successfully classified control and degraded tissues, indicating distinct activity of these enzymes on collagen assembly. Results from human cartilage suggested that collagenase effects were more representative of in vivo degeneration, emphasizing the potential of using high-resolution SHG and optical scattering as an earlier diagnostic tool for OA.

Summary: In this study, a collagen hydrogel using collagen exclusively produced in Romania was obtained through electron beam crosslinking. The macromolecular structure and properties of the hydrogel were analyzed through various methods. The results showed that irradiation with e-beam up to 25 kGy induces crosslinking processes in collagen structure without causing advanced degradation processes. Collagen could be used as a promising material for developing new wound dressings for rapid healing through irradiation technologies.

Summary: Ge-based hybrid perovskite materials show great potential for second harmonic generation (SHG). Newly discovered Ge-based bromide perovskite materials exhibit tunable SHG responses and the high SHG efficiency is attributed to specific structural and theoretical factors.

Summary: A new drug delivery system consisting of clindamycin phosphate entrapped in acid-etched halloysite nanotubes was successfully prepared and characterized. It was used as an antibacterial component for bone regeneration in multicomponent hydrogels. The entrapment efficiency, release profile, cytocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and ability to induce biomineralization were studied for the system. The hydrogel with a chemical and physical crosslinking process showed better properties and potential as a bone repair material.

Summary: Understanding symmetry breaking in ferroelectric materials is crucial for manipulating their functional properties. We developed a spectral imaging method using optical second harmonic generation to investigate the mechanisms behind crystallographic symmetry breaking. By studying (K,Na)NbO3 single crystals, we demonstrated the method's ability to analyze domain variants and their thermal evolution across phase transitions. The method can be extended to other ferroelectric materials with potential enhancements.

Summary: We present a theoretical study on second-harmonic generation from a singular metasurface, which strongly interacts with incident light and generates intense surface polarization, resulting in the generation of second-harmonic field. By using transformation optics, the calculation of nonlinear optical response is simplified, and the dependence on the incident angle is weak, making it potentially useful for all-angle harmonic generation. Furthermore, we investigate the symmetry dependence of second-harmonic generation in the far field and demonstrate an enhanced conversion efficiency under normal incidence by breaking the surface inversion symmetry.

Summary: Collagen fibers play a vital role in various tissues, but accurate segmentation is challenging due to variable imaging depths. This study employed a U-Net convolutional neural network for precise segmentation of collagen fibers and demonstrated superior performance compared to other thresholding techniques, particularly at deeper imaging depths.

Summary: This study improved the emulsification properties of gum arabic by crosslinking it with genipin, resulting in enhanced emulsifying stability and decreased dosage of emulsifier. The genipin-crosslinked gum arabic showed larger molecular weight and more compact conformation, leading to more stable emulsions even after sterilization or prolonged storage at elevated temperatures.

Summary: Mirror symmetries play a crucial role in fundamental properties and conservation laws, with potential magnetoelectric cross-coupling when both spatial inversion and time reversal are broken. The giant nonreciprocal optical response observed in SHG of CuB2O4 is due to interference between magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole contributions, showing the potential for nonreciprocal nonlinear optical functionalities in multiferroics and magnetoelectrics. Resonantly enhanced magnetic-dipole transitions contribute significantly to the nonreciprocity, maximizing the effect despite the inherently weaker nature compared to electric-dipole transitions.

Summary: Efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) occurs for crystals with broken inversion symmetry, such as transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Here the authors show SHG tuning in bilayer MoS2 - an inversion-symmetric crystal - mediated by interlayer excitons.
