PurposeTo compare rates of myopia progression and adverse events between orthokeratology (OK) and soft contact lens (SCL) wearers over a 10-year period in schoolchildren. MethodsMedical records of consecutive patients (16years of age at baseline) who started OK for myopia correction and continued the treatment for 10years were retrospectively reviewed. For the control group, patients who started using soft contact lenses (SCLs) for myopia correction and continued to use them for 10years were also reviewed. Clinical data, including sex, age, manifest refraction, visual acuity, prescription lens power, and adverse events during the 10-year period, were recorded. Estimated myopia progression was calculated as the sum of changes in prescription lens power during 10years' and residual refractive errors at the 10-year visit,' and was compared between groups. We also compared the incidence of adverse events between groups over the 10-year study period. ResultsA total of 104 eyes of 53 patients who underwent OK treatment and 78 eyes of 39 patients who wore SCLs fulfilled the criteria. The estimated myopia progression over the 10-year period found in the OK and SCL groups were -1.260.98 and -1.79 +/- 1.24days, respectively; this difference was statistically significant (p=0.001). Additionally, lower myopia progression was found in the OK in comparison to the SCL group at all baseline ages (p=0.003 to p=0.049) except at 16years old (p=0.41). No significant difference was found in the number of adverse events found between the OK (119) and SCL (103) groups (p=0.72). ConclusionsThe results of this study supports the long-term efficacy and safety of OK lens wear in reducing myopia progression in schoolchildren.

Summary: This study demonstrated that physiological recanalisation of the lacrimal passage after dacryoendoscopic surgery significantly reduced the positivity rate of conjunctival sac culture and the number of detected microorganism strains. It also decreased the presence of potentially pathogenic and drug-resistant bacteria while increasing the proportion of indigenous bacteria, leading to a normalization of conjunctival flora.

Summary: The study quantified stereopsis and other visual functions in patients with unilateral branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), finding that changes in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity affect stereopsis in these patients. Additionally, initial visual acuity was identified as a prognostic factor for posttreatment stereopsis.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between contrast sensitivity (CS) and vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) in patients with central retinal vein occlusion following treatment with ranibizumab. The results showed that CS had a stronger association with VR-QOL than visual acuity. The improvement in CS was significantly correlated with the improvement in VR-QOL, while visual acuity improvement was not correlated. Additionally, the distance between the external limiting membrane and retinal pigment epithelium and average ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness were associated with CS.

Summary: Extended depth of focus contact lenses significantly improve visual acuity at near to intermediate distances in eyes with monofocal intraocular lens implantation, but may cause a decrease in far visual acuity under low-contrast conditions and a slight decline in contrast sensitivity at middle to high spatial frequencies.

Summary: Two novel imaging methods were used in this study to detect significant amounts of deposits on heavily worn orthokeratology (OK) lenses, and were sensitive enough to detect a reduction in deposition following the use of the two cleaning solutions tested. Furthermore, these methods could visualize and quantify the thickness of lens deposits along the reverse curve.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dry eye disease (DED) on the repeatability of ocular biometric measurements in cataract patients. The findings revealed that DED was associated with a decline in the measurement repeatability of corneal curvature radius and axial length. Shortened tear film break-up time and higher corneal staining scores were correlated with a deterioration in measurement repeatability.

Summary: This study investigated the use of image processing algorithms to improve the visibility of dacryoendoscopic images. The results showed that image processing significantly improved the visual score of the images and enhanced the contrast and resolution in turbid fluid. These techniques can be applied in real-time and easily introduced in clinical practice.

Summary: The impact of visual functions on vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL) in patients with cystoid macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO-CME) is not well understood. This study examined various visual measures and found that visual acuity of the fellow eye had the strongest impact on VR-QoL, while contrast sensitivity and stereopsis were also associated with VR-QoL.
