Effect of metformin versus metformin plus liraglutide on gonadal and metabolic profiles in overweight patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

Summary: The study aimed to observe the effects of MET monotherapy and MET plus LIRA combination therapy on gonadal and metabolic profiles in overweight patients with PCOS. The results showed that both MET monotherapy and MET plus LIRA combination therapy improved glucose metabolism and relieved insulin resistance in overweight patients with PCOS. Furthermore, MET plus LIRA combination therapy was more effective in improving reproductive abnormalities and hyperandrogenemia compared to MET monotherapy.

The Association between Human Epididymis Secretory Protein 4 and Metabolic Syndrome

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the tumor marker HE4 levels in patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). The analysis revealed a significant association between the presence of MetS and increased HE4 levels, with a positive relationship between the number of MetS components and HE4 levels. Low high-density lipoprotein levels and high triglyceride levels were independently associated with elevated HE4 levels.

Human oligosaccharides, including sialylated HMOs, have shown promise in inhibiting VEGFR-2-mediated angiogenesis.

Recapitulating lipid accumulation and related metabolic dysregulation in human liver-derived organoids

Summary: Fatty liver disease is a significant global health burden, and the lack of robust experimental models hampers research and therapeutic development. This study developed an organoid-based 3D culture model to replicate key features of fatty liver disease, focusing on intracellular lipid accumulation and metabolic dysregulation. Human liver-derived organoids were exposed to lactate, pyruvate, and octanoic acid, leading to lipid accumulation and impairment of mitochondrial function. Treatment with obeticholic acid and metformin alleviated fat accumulation in the organoids. This study demonstrates the potential of using organoids for studying fatty liver disease and testing potential therapeutics.

Summary: Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is an important biomarker that regulates the concentration of hormones in the blood. It is considered a reliable marker for insulin resistance and can predict the development of type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, decreased levels of SHBG are strongly correlated with increased levels of pro-inflammatory mediators. SHBG has the potential to be used as a drug candidate in the treatment of metabolic disorders.

Metformin attenuates expression of angiogenic and inflammatory genes in human endometriotic stromal cells

Summary: Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease characterized by the presence and growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. Metformin, an anti-diabetic agent, has anti-angiogenic properties which can reduce migration and proliferation of endometriotic stromal cells, as well as attenuate the expression of angiogenesis and inflammatory genes within these cells. This suggests that Metformin may have therapeutic potential for endometriosis and could be used as an effective adjuvant in treatment.

The Effect of Metformin on Aminotransferase Levels, Metabolic Parameters and Body Mass Index in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Patients: A Meta-analysis

Summary: In this study, the potential effect of anti-diabetic drugs, such as metformin, pioglitazone, dapagliflozin, and their combinations, on the manifestations of NAFLD were examined using a rat model. The results showed that these drugs not only ameliorated the metabolic impairment caused by NAFLD, but also improved its functional and structural manifestations, reversing markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, hepatic fibrosis, and hepatocyte apoptosis.

Summary: This study examined the prognostic role of tumor burden score (TBS) relative to albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade among patients undergoing curative-intent resection of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). The results showed that decreased tumor burden was associated with better long-term outcomes. Patients with high TBS and high ALBI grade had worse overall survival and higher risk of early recurrence and death.

Management of splanchnic vein thrombosis

Summary: This study conducted cluster analysis for ICC subtypes to explore their association with long-term outcomes and recurrence patterns. Three distinct ICC subtypes were identified, with significant differences in overall survival and recurrence-free survival. Despite a more favorable disease profile, the inflammatory ICC subtype had a higher incidence of recurrence.
