Summary: This study developed and validated analytical methods using liquid-liquid extraction combined with solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to detect nonylphenols (NPs) in food samples. The results showed that the levels of NPs in food are highly dependent on the area of cultivation and the source of the food. These findings are important for determining the dietary exposure to NPs and understanding the contribution of different food sources in South Korea.

Summary: In September 2022, the European Commission released a new regulation allowing the use of novel technologies to generate data for establishing regulatory processes on recycled plastic materials for food contact. This study compared different analytical approaches for screening commercially purchased post-consumer recycled polypropylene buckets. The results highlight the importance of detailed characterization and the advantages and disadvantages of using conventional gas chromatography and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometry.

Summary: In this study, a specific, reliable, and suitable method for a fast and simultaneous analysis of 335 pesticides in ginseng was developed using liquid chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The method was validated for linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision, with limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) ranging from 0.1-5.8 μg/kg and 0.3-17.5 μg/kg, respectively. Analysis of 467 ginseng samples from 2016 to 2019 revealed pesticide residues in 304 samples, but most were below the standard. The hazard quotient (HQ) of ginseng for detected pesticides was less than 1, indicating low risk.

Summary: An improved procedure utilizing gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry has successfully detected the addition of exogenous C4 plant-derived sugars to pineapple juice. Site-specific C-13 analysis of ethanol derived from pineapple sugars has proven to be a reliable method in differentiating between authentic pineapple juices and those adulterated with commercial beet and cane sucrose.

Summary: This work aims to evaluate the purity of chromatographic peaks using a two-dimensional correlation (2D-corr) analysis, which provides synchronous and asynchronous contour plots for determining the number of peaks and the presence of overlapping species in each peak. By analyzing Cayenne pepper extracts using HPLC coupled with a coulometric array of sixteen detectors, the 2D-corr analysis demonstrated the presence of at least three species on a peak at a retention time of 0.93 min. Mass spectrometry (MS) analysis identified the coeluting species as quinic acid, ascorbic acid, and phenylalanine. Overall, this work supports the use of 2D-corr analysis to verify the purity of chromatographic peaks and detect overlapping compounds.

Summary: This study compared pacu fish raised in an integrated rice-fish farming system with those raised in tanks using F-ratio analysis, and discovered the impact of farming methods on the fish's metabolome. Despite challenges such as artifact peaks and redundant hits, improved analysis methods and artifact removal led to accurate results. The findings suggest that the integrated farming system may negatively affect the quality of pacu fish.

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop an analytical method for determining multi-pesticide residues in vegetable products using a reduced-scale extraction method and flow-modulated comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The method showed high recoveries and low limits of detection, making it suitable for trace analyte determination.

Summary: In the field of metabolomics, the accurate identification of unknown compounds is crucial. A comprehensive identification workflow including LC-MS and NMR techniques was developed and successfully used to identify five taste-related features in soy sauce. Directed two-dimensional chromatography allowed for tailored fractionation of each feature, leading to the successful identification of proline-based 2,5-diketopiperazines which may contribute to taste through bitter or umami flavors.

Summary: Exhaled breath can provide new information about the metabolic effects of diets, as shown in this pilot study where non-targeted analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath revealed large individual differences. Compounds related to whole grain diets were identified in the exhaled breath samples, indicating their potential for further research.

Summary: A precise analytical method based on QuEChERS was developed for the simultaneous determination of 11 polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), benzocarbazole (BZCZ), and 9H-carbazoles (CZ). The method was validated using various parameters and showed good linearity, accuracy, and precision. The method represents a reliable tool for the routine analysis of PHCZ congeners in invertebrate animals.
