Summary: The study investigates the association between mean HbA1c, HbA1c variability, and all-cause mortality and diabetes-related macrovascular complications in patients with diabetes. The results show that both low (<6%) and high (>=8%) levels of HbA1c are associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality and diabetes-related macrovascular complications. Patients with stable HbA1c levels of 6-8% have the lowest risk.

Summary: This study explored the mediating role of diabetes distress in the relationship between coping and glycaemic control, and found that insulin treatment moderated this mediation. The results indicated that interventions aimed at boosting confidence and autonomy in individuals with diabetes could help reduce diabetes distress.

Summary: This study conducted a scoping review to examine the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and adverse perioperative outcomes. The results showed that the definition of DM in the published literature is inconsistent, limiting the potential for pooled analysis. The study findings suggest that DM is associated with adverse outcomes such as mortality, complications, and infections.

Summary: This study examined the periodontal conditions of T2DM patients in North Italy and found that poor glycemic control, family history of T2DM, and C-reactive protein levels were predictors of severe periodontitis, while severe periodontitis, waist circumference, unbalanced diet, and sedentary lifestyle were predictors of poor glycemic control. There is a strong bidirectional connection between periodontitis and poor glycemic control.

Summary: This study found that higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The risk was significantly higher for HbA1c levels of 7.0% to 7.9% and ≥8.0% compared to HbA1c <7.0%.

Summary: This study examined the potential mediating roles of domain-specific physical activities and sedentary behaviors in the relationship between area-level socioeconomic status (SES) and cardiometabolic risk. The results showed that higher SES was associated with a lower cardiometabolic risk score, while lower SES was associated with less frequent walking, lower recreational physical activity, and higher TV viewing, all of which were associated with higher CCR scores. This study suggests that physical activities and sedentary behaviors may partially explain the relationship between SES and cardiometabolic risk.

After analyzing the CGM data and HbA1c levels of 98 pregnant women with T1DM, a pregnancy-specific GMI-MBG equation was developed. This equation should be recommended for antenatal clinical care.

Summary: Debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) is commonly used for acute prosthetic joint infections, but its outcomes can be inconsistent. Performing a second DAIR after a failed first debridement is controversial, as it has uncertain outcomes and unfavorable prognosis if failure occurs. This study analyzed 84 cases of acute prosthetic joint infection treated with DAIR, and found that the success rate of a second DAIR after failure was significantly lower than the first procedure. The final outcome of the second failed DAIRs was unfavorable with no eradication of the infection. Therefore, removal of the components should be considered.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the Quality of Life (QOL) of breast-cancer patients diagnosed with COVID-19, analyze its evolution, compare the QOL of these patients according to the COVID-19 wave in which they were diagnosed, and examine the clinical and demographic determinants of QOL. The results of the study showed that patients with breast cancer and COVID-19 adapted well to the illness, and the differences between wave-based groups may be due to fewer COVID restrictions, more positive COVID information, and more vaccinated patients in the second and third waves.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of prehabilitation on the postoperative outcomes of heart transplantation and its cost-effectiveness. The results showed that prehabilitation significantly improved patients' preoperative functional capacity and quality of life, while reducing the rate and severity of postoperative complications, mechanical ventilation time, ICU stay, total hospitalization stay, and the need for transfer to nursing/rehabilitation facilities after discharge. Cost-consequence analysis demonstrated that prehabilitation did not increase the total surgical process costs.

Summary: This study examined the geographical distribution of non-affective first-episode psychosis (NA-FEP) in a northern region of Spain and its association with environmental risk factors such as urbanicity, migration, and deprivation. The results showed that NA-FEP incidence risks were spatially patterned and significantly associated with the migrant population, unemployment, and consumption of anxiolytics and antidepressants. These findings suggest the importance of targeting specific geographical areas for preventive interventions addressing modifiable environmental risk factors for NA-FEP.

Summary: This cohort study conducted in Valencia, Spain, aimed to identify individual and initial prescription-related factors associated with an increased risk of opioid-related misuse, poisoning, and dependence (MPD) in patients with non-cancer pain. The study found that the use of ultrafast opioids, short-acting opioids, and long-acting opioids as initial prescriptions was associated with a higher risk of MPD. Additionally, male sex, younger age, lack of economic resources, and registered alcohol misuse were individual factors associated with an increased risk of MPD.

Summary: The study found that the 2018 risk minimisation measures had limited impact on the utilization patterns of oral retinoids among females of childbearing age in four European countries. Pregnancy still occurred during retinoid use, and pregnant women were still prescribed with these drugs. Regulators, policymakers, prescribers, and researchers need to reconsider implementation strategies to prevent any temporary association between pregnancy and retinoid use.

Summary: A serosurvey conducted in the Valencian Community, Spain, in October 2022, when BA.5 was the predominant variant, revealed that the seroprevalence of anti-nucleocapsid antibodies (indicative of past infection) was 71.0%, and the seroprevalence of total receptor binding domain antibodies (indicative of past infection or vaccination) was 98.4%. The study also found that 66.7% of the population had hybrid immunity, with lower rates in the elderly population. These findings are important for public health strategies, and a second vaccination booster is recommended for the elderly population.
