Obesity in acute ischaemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis therapy

Hongmin Li, Suliman Khan, Rabeea Siddique, Qian Bai, Yang Liu, Ruiyi Zhang, Yan Zhang, V. Wee Yong, Mengzhou Xue

Summary: This article analyzes the relationship between obesity and the prognosis of acute ischaemic stroke patients treated with IVT. Obesity is an independent predictor for ischaemic stroke, but its impact on IVT treatment has not reached a consensus.

Quantitative analysis of spinal cord neuropathology in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Emily Wuerch, Manoj Mishra, Helvira Melo, Vincent Ebacher, V. Wee Yong

Summary: The study introduces a quantitative whole slide imaging immunofluorescence method for investigating the extent of neuroinflammation, axonal loss, and myelin density in the thoracic spinal cord of EAE. This method is expected to strengthen histological comparisons in EAE and impact research on multiple sclerosis.

Mechanism-based criteria to improve therapeutic outcomes in progressive multiple sclerosis

Heather Y. F. Yong, V. Wee Yong

Summary: Despite significant progress in developing disease-modifying therapies for relapsing-remitting MS, the options remain limited for progressive MS. Early treatment, antagonism of neuroaxonal injury mediators, remediation of oxidative stress, and promotion of neuroprotection are crucial for successful therapy in progressive MS.

The Important Role of Zinc in Neurological Diseases

Zhe Li, Yang Liu, Ruixue Wei, V. Wee Yong, Mengzhou Xue

Summary: Zinc is an abundant metal ion in the CNS, playing a crucial role in physiological and pathological brain functions. It promotes antioxidant effects, neurogenesis, and immune system responses. Zinc regulates gene expression, activates enzymes, and acts as a regulator of synaptic activity and neuronal plasticity. Changes in zinc status can impact neurological diseases, including stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injuries, and depression. This review explores the mechanisms of brain zinc balance, the role of zinc in neurological diseases, and strategies for prevention and treatment.

Diagnosing viral encephalitis and emerging concepts

Heather Y. F. Yong, Daniel M. Pastula, Ronak K. Kapadia

Summary: This review provides an updated clinical approach to diagnosing viral encephalitis and discusses recent advancements in the field. It does not cover the neurological effects of coronaviruses, including COVID-19, and the management of encephalitis. Diagnostic tools for viral encephalitis are rapidly evolving, with multiplex PCR panels being widely used for rapid pathogen detection and metagenomic next-generation sequencing offering potential in diagnosing challenging and rare causes. In addition, emerging infections such as arboviruses, monkeypox virus, and measles are also discussed.

Characteristics of shunt failure in 38,095 adult shunt insertion surgeries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Albert M. Isaacs, Runze Yang, Magalie Cadieux, David Ben-Israel, Nicholas Sader, Michael Opoku-Darko, Leonardo Frizon, Heather Yong, Zahra Premji, Sean Nagel, Mark G. Hamilton

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the shunt failure rate and etiologies in adult patients with hydrocephalus. The overall shunt failure rate in adults was found to be at least 32% after 2 years. The most common causes of shunt failure in adults were infection and obstruction, with the distal catheter being the most common site of failure.

Prolonged Transient Global Amnesia: Part of the Clinical Spectrum or a Separate Disease Entity?

Heather Y. F. Yong, Carlos R. Camara-Lemarroy

Summary: This is a case report describing an atypical case of prolonged TGA, highlighting our current lack of knowledge about this disease entity and its pathophysiology. The patient's clinical and imaging features were consistent with TGA, although her symptoms persisted for 72 hours, which remains controversial.

Quantitative MRI findings indicate diffuse white matter damage in Susac Syndrome

P. Johnson, J. K. Chan, I. M. Vavasour, S. Abel, L. E. Lee, H. Yong, C. Laule, D. K. B. Li, R. Tam, A. Traboulsee, R. L. Carruthers, S. H. Kolind

Summary: This study used quantitative MRI to evaluate non-lesional white matter demyelination changes in Susac Syndrome (SuS), and compared them with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy controls (HC). The results showed evidence of myelin damage, particularly in the corpus callosum, and more extensive microstructural injury in non-lesional white matter in SuS, supporting the hypothesis of widespread microstructural changes and diffuse demyelination in SuS syndrome.

B cells in central nervous system disease: diversity, locations and pathophysiology

Rajiv W. Jain, V. Wee Yong

Summary: Although B cells constitute a minor cell population in the central nervous system (CNS), they can contribute to CNS pathology, especially in multiple sclerosis, through secretion of antibodies and effector molecules and presentation of antigens. Jain and Yong discuss the roles of B cells in the CNS and the potential for targeting these cells in various neurological conditions.

Exercise and the brain in multiple sclerosis

Brian M. Lozinski, V. Wee Yong

Summary: People with multiple sclerosis were previously advised to avoid exercise, but now they are encouraged to remain active. Exercise has been shown to improve physical well-being, cognition, mental health, and cause positive changes in the brain's structure and function.
