This study compared the effect of prolonged moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on reducing abdominal visceral fat in obese young women with that of work-equivalent (300 kJ/training session) high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Forty-three participants received either HIIT (n = 15), MICT (n = 15), or no training (CON,n = 13) for 12 weeks. The abdominal visceral fat area (AVFA) and abdominal subcutaneous fat area (ASFA) of the participants were measured through computed tomography scans preintervention and postintervention. Total fat mass and the fatmass of the android, gynoid, and trunk regions were assessed through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Following HIIT and MICT, comparable reductions in AVFA (-9.1,-9.2 cm(2)), ASFA (-35,-28.3 cm(2)), and combinedAVFAandASFA(-44.7,-37.5 cm(2), p > 0.05) were observed. Similarly, reductions in fat percentage (-2.5%,-2.4%), total fat mass (-2.8,-2.8 kg), and fat mass of the android (-0.3,-0.3 kg), gynoid (-0.5,-0.7 kg), and trunk (-1.6, -1.2 kg, p > 0.05) regions did not differ between HIIT and MICT. No variable changed in CON. In conclusion, MICT consisting of prolonged sessions has no quantitative advantage, compared with that resulting from HIIT, in abdominal visceral fat reduction. HIIT appears to be the predominant strategy for controlling obesity because of its time efficiency.

Exercise training-induced visceral fat loss in obese women: The role of training intensity and modality

Haifeng Zhang, Tomas K. Tong, Zhaowei Kong, Qingde Shi, Yang Liu, Jinlei Nie

Summary: This study compared the effects of four-cycle ergometer training regimens with different exercise intensity and modality on visceral fat loss. The findings showed that all-out sprint interval training, supramaximal SIT, and high-intensity interval training led to greater reductions in abdominal visceral fat area compared to moderate-intensity continuous training.

Summary: The study demonstrated that 12-week stair walking training improved body composition parameters in Chinese females with obesity, particularly showing the superiority of the descending stair exercise protocol in improving insulin sensitivity, which may be attributed to the decreases observed in TNF-alpha levels.

Skeletal Muscle Metabolomic Responses to Endurance and Resistance Training in Rats under Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress

Summary: This study compared the antidepressant effects of endurance and resistance exercise, and investigated the metabolomic changes in skeletal muscles in response to exercise in a rat model of chronic stress-induced depression. The findings demonstrated that both types of exercise were effective in improving depression symptoms, with endurance exercise showing a slightly better effect. Furthermore, different metabolic pathways were involved in depression and responded to exercise interventions.

Summary: The mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM) serves as a crucial platform for regulating various cellular processes and diseases. Evidence suggests that alterations in Ca2+ transport may be a universal mechanism for ER-mitochondria cross-talk in different physiological/pathological conditions.

A scoping review of the contralateral effects of unilateral peripheral stimulation on neuromuscular function

Shi Zhou, Shuang-Shuang Zhang, Zachary J. Crowley-McHattan

Summary: This scoping review examines the cross-education effects caused by peripheral neuromuscular stimulation methods such as electrical stimulation, mechanical vibration, and percutaneous needling. The review found that while the contralateral effects are robust, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The study emphasizes the need to enhance awareness of cross-education, translate theoretical concepts into clinical practice, and conduct well-designed clinical trials to determine the efficacy of cross-education therapies.

Summary: This study compared the effects of hydrogen gas and vitamin C on mitochondrial biogenesis in rat skeletal muscle during exercise. Both hydrogen gas and vitamin C significantly reduced serum levels of MDA after exercise, but hydrogen gas had a smaller impact on mitochondrial biogenesis compared to vitamin C.

Summary: This study aims to examine the influence of changing the cervical anterior angle on the lumbar lordosis angle, and to provide a basis for establishing a new postural rehabilitation strategy. The results suggest that increasing the cervical anterior angle can increase the lumbar lordosis angle, and the change in head and neck posture can reduce the thoracic kyphosis angle.

Summary: This study compared joint kinematic parameters of trunk and lower limbs between young and older adults, finding that with increasing age, range of motion (ROM) in the lower limbs significantly decreased, resulting in a decrease in gait speed. Older adults compensated for this by increasing thoracic rotation. Therefore, older adults should improve muscle strength and increase ROM to improve gait patterns.
