Human evolution suggests that the default position for health is to be physically active. Inactivity, by contrast, has serious negative effects on health across the lifespan. Therefore, only in physically active people can the inherent aging process proceed unaffected by disuse complications. In such individuals, although the relationship between age and physiological function remains complex, function is generally superior with health, well being, and the aging process optimized.

Methodological considerations in measuring specific force in human single skinned muscle fibres

Michaeljohn Kalakoutis, Irene Di Giulio, Abdel Douiri, Julien Ochala, Stephen D. R. Harridge, Roger C. Woledge

Summary: Chemically skinned fibres are used to study human muscle contractile function and specific force (SF) is an important parameter. Variability in SF across studies is due to methodological differences, with solution composition likely being a key factor influencing the values. Despite this variability, consistency in SF values is observed in fibres containing specific myosin heavy chain isoforms.

Aging and skeletal muscle force control: Current perspectives and future directions

Jamie Pethick, Matthew J. D. Taylor, Stephen D. R. Harridge

Summary: During voluntary muscle contractions, force output exhibits fluctuations in both magnitude and complexity. Older adults demonstrate greater magnitude and lower complexity in force fluctuations, indicating decreased steadiness and adaptability of force output. Age-associated loss-of-force control is correlated with decreased performance in daily activities and may be more important for functional capacity than age-associated decreases in maximal strength. Acute physical activity interventions have shown promise in reversing the loss-of-force control in older individuals, but the long-term effects are still unknown.

Revisiting specific force loss in human permeabilized single skeletal muscle fibers obtained from older individuals

Michaeljohn Kalakoutis, Ross D. D. Pollock, Norman R. R. Lazarus, R. Andrew Atkinson, Marc George, Onur Berber, Roger C. C. Woledge, Julien Ochala, Stephen D. R. Harridge

Summary: The specific force (SF) of human aging in single muscle fibers is inconsistent in different studies, which may result from variations in the health status/physical activity levels and methodological differences. This study compared SF in fibers from older hip fracture patients, healthy master cyclists, and healthy nontrained young adults using two different activating solutions. The results showed that the activating solution significantly affected the force and revealed a difference in sensitivity in muscle fibers of hip fracture patients.
