Summary: Ionotropic gelation (IG) is an attractive method for synthesizing water-soluble polymeric nanoparticles and sub-micron particles. The technique relies on the electrostatic interaction between ionic species of opposite charge. However, achieving size control in conventional bench-top processes is challenging. This study explores the combination of membrane dispersion technology with IG as a scalable method for producing chitosan sub-micron particles.

Summary: Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide that is biodegradable, bioadhesive, and biocompatible. It has been extensively studied for oral insulin drug delivery systems. Electrostatic interaction between chitosan and insulin leads to the formation of self-assembled nanoparticles, which can protect insulin from degradation and improve intestinal uptake. Functionalized chitosan nanoparticles also offer opportunities for targeted and prolonged delivery. This review provides a comprehensive guide for formulating stable insulin-chitosan nanoparticles using mild ionic interactions.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize a nanoparticle formulation for orally delivered insulin by assessing the relationship between design parameters and experimental data using response surface methodology. The results showed that a nanoparticle formulation with 0.03% PEG, 0.047% chitosan, and 1.20% albumin provided an optimal solution for insulin oral delivery, maintaining insulin bioactivity in simulated intestinal media.

Summary: This study presents a promising approach of encapsulating pesticides within nanoparticles for sustainable agriculture. The encapsulation efficiency, nanoparticle yield, and particle size of the CS-LC nanoparticles were determined under optimal conditions. The nanoparticles showed high efficacy against Drosophila suzukii, surpassing the commercial product. The encapsulation of chemical pesticides within biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles could establish a sustainable IPM strategy.

Summary: Novel humic-chitosan nanoconjugates (NC) were successfully synthesized using humic substances derived from three green composts. The NCs showed good thermal stability and antibacterial activity, indicating their potential as effective and sustainable antimicrobial agents. This study enhances the feasibility of utilizing humic substances from composted agricultural wastes to synthesize novel antibacterial nanoparticles and improve the sustainability of agricultural productions.

Summary: Shrimp oil encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles shows better oxidative stability and quality compared to free oil, potentially due to the synergistic effect between oil enclosure by nanoparticles and the antioxidative property of chitosan. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and astaxanthin are more retained in CSNP encapsulated oil over 8 weeks of storage, indicating the high potency of CSNPs in preventing nutritional value and active component losses in shrimp oil.

Summary: Over the past decade, Pickering emulsion has been increasingly used for encapsulating bioactive compounds due to its high stability and biocompatibility. In this study, palm tocotrienols were encapsulated in a calcium carbonate Pickering emulsion, followed by alginate gelation and chitosan coating. The addition of chitosan improved the stability of microcapsules, resulting in increased encapsulation efficiency. The optimized parameters led to high encapsulation efficiency and enhanced oil loading efficiency for potential delivery of palm tocotrienols.

Summary: Chitosan nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 100 to 700 nm were successfully isolated from Bombyx mori. The optimal conditions for the formation of these nanoparticles were determined through the adjustment of chitosan concentrations and ratios, as well as the addition of a surface modifier and ionotropic gelation. Atomic force microscopy was used to study the size and stability of these nanoparticles, and the results showed that they were influenced by the formation conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato in the southwest of Iran. Three genotypes (G1, G3, G6/G7) were identified, with multiple haplotypes within each genotype. The results suggest a heterogeneous population of the G1 genotype worldwide, and a notable difference in the G6/G7 genotype in the study area compared to other regions. The presence of the G6/G7 genotype in the southwest of Iran may be due to transmission from other regions or involvement of different hosts in its expansion.
