Meat quality depends on tissue composition which is in turn influenced by different factors, such as diet, genotype, age, or sex. We evaluated the effects of breed, 24 h fasting, and dietary energy source (HO: oleic acid versus CH: carbohydrates) on the expression of candidate genes involved in adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and lipolysis in the adipose tissue from Iberian and Duroc growing pigs. The Iberian pigs showed greater feed intake, backfat thickness, and saturated fatty acids (SFA) content in the subcutaneous fat, whereas the Duroc pigs had greater ham weight and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content. In both breeds, the diet induced changes in the fatty acid (FA) composition of subcutaneous fat samples. The HO group had higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and oleic acid, and lower SFA than the CH group. Regarding gene expression, breed and feeding status (fasting versus postprandial) had significant effects on gene expression, with quantitative interactions between them, while diet showed negligible effects. In general, adipogenic and lipogenic genes were upregulated in the Iberian pigs and in postprandial samples. In contrast, the expression of lipolytic genes showed complex interaction effects. Our results agree with the phenotypic differences between the Iberian and Duroc breeds and with the inhibition of lipogenesis by fasting. Quantitative interactions between breed and feeding status effects were observed, which indicates a different response to fasting of the two breeds, with the obese Iberian breed showing a more stable expression of lipogenic genes. These results highlight the complexity of lipid metabolism regulation, especially in relation to lipolysis processes.

Fishmeal Dietary Replacement Up to 50%: A Comparative Study of Two Insect Meals for Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Federico Melenchon, Eduardo de Mercado, Hector J. Pula, Gabriel Cardenete, Fernando G. Barroso, Dmitri Fabrikov, Helena M. Lourenco, Maria-Fernanda Pessoa, Leidy Lagos, Pabodha Weththasinghe, Marcos Cortes, Cristina Tomas-Almenar

Summary: Reducing dependence on fishmeal is a major challenge for sustainable aquaculture, and insects are one of the most promising alternatives. This study found that yellow mealworm is the best alternative for rainbow trout, possibly due to changes in protein utilization and intestinal histology. Insect meals also showed potential as functional ingredients in preventing tissue damage.

Summary: The hypothalamic transcriptome of pure Iberian and crossbred piglets at 60 days-old was evaluated in this study. The results showed that gender and genotype have an impact on the hypothalamic transcriptome. The gene expression differences between genotypes were more significant in males, with a higher expression of genes related to mitochondrial activity in pure Iberian males and higher expression of SIRT3 regulator in crossbred males. Such differences were not found in females, except for some genes related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Hernan D. Laviano, Gerardo Gomez, Maria Munoz, Juan M. Garcia-Casco, Yolanda Nunez, Rosa Escudero, Ana Heras Molina, Antonio Gonzalez-Bulnes, Cristina Ovilo, Clemente Lopez-Bote, Ana I. Rey

Summary: Modifying the composition of a sow's milk, specifically by supplementing with vitamin E and/or hydroxytyrosol, can improve the intestinal health and growth of piglets. The study found that vitamin E supplementation increased the levels of C18:1n-7 in colostrum, while hydroxytyrosol increased the levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin E supplementation also decreased certain fatty acids and increased ?-6-desaturase activity in 7-day milk. The lowest levels of milk lipid oxidation were observed in the vitamin E supplemented group, while hydroxytyrosol supplementation increased oxidation.

Summary: Different feeding strategies are being applied to sows in order to obtain homogeneous piglets' weights and improved health status. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of vitamin E (VE), hydroxytyrosol (HXT), or their combination on the growth pattern and oxidative status of piglets, as well as the factors contributing to these effects. The results showed that both VE and HXT improved the oxidative status of sows and piglets, and modified the growth pattern of the piglets depending on the growing period. The study also found that colostrum composition played a significant role in the growth patterns of the piglets.

A comparison of marker-based estimators of inbreeding and inbreeding depression

Armando Caballero, Almudena Fernandez, Beatriz Villanueva, Miguel A. Toro

Summary: This study investigates the accuracy of estimators of inbreeding based on molecular markers in different mating systems and artificially selected populations. The results show that when the allele frequencies of the base population are known, all estimators based on marker allele frequencies provide accurate estimates of inbreeding coefficients and inbreeding depression. When the allele frequencies are unknown, F-LH1 is the most correlated estimator with the actual values, and F-YA2 provides the most accurate estimates of inbreeding depression.
