Fecal microbiota transplantation versus glucocorticoids for the induction of remission in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) with glucocorticoids as induction therapy in ulcerative colitis (UC). The results showed that FMT was as effective as glucocorticoids in inducing remission in active mild to moderate UC, with fewer adverse events. Changes in certain cytokines in the serum might be related to the efficacy of FMT therapy in UC.

The variation characteristics of fecal microbiota in remission UC patients with anxiety and depression

Summary: Anxiety and depression still exist in UC patients even in the remission period. This study found that the composition of intestinal microbiota differs between UC patients with anxiety and depression and those without, with a decrease in probiotics and an increase in pathogens in the former group. These findings may provide new insights into the recurrence of UC caused by impaired psychological function and offer potential treatment strategies for UC patients with psychological issues.

The Distinguishing Bacterial Features From Active and Remission Stages of Ulcerative Colitis Revealed by Paired Fecal Metagenomes

Summary: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a serious chronic inflammatory bowel disease. This study analyzed paired fecal samples from 42 UC patients at the active and remission stages to study the changes in the intestinal microbiota. The study identified 13 species of microbes that can effectively distinguish the active and remission stages of UC. Functional analysis revealed downregulation of sporulation and biosynthesis, and upregulation of the hydrogen peroxide catabolic process in the remission of UC.

Summary: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can induce clinical remission in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. In this study, capsulized FMT was successfully administered to UC patients, resulting in clinical remission in 57.1% of patients and clinical response in 76.2%.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and microbiological efficacy, tolerability, and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC). The results showed that FMT as an add-on therapy performed better in improving symptoms and disease activity levels compared to standard-care treatment. Additionally, FMT was found to significantly improve gut microbiota composition.

Fucoidan Ameliorated Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Ulcerative Colitis by Modulating Gut Microbiota and Bile Acid Metabolism

Summary: Gut dysbiosis and bile acid metabolism disturbance are involved in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fucoidan on BA metabolism and gut microbiota in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mice. Our results showed that fucoidan effectively suppressed colonic inflammation and repaired the gut barrier. In addition, fucoidan increased the relative abundance of certain bacteria families and short-chain fatty acids, while modulating bile acid metabolism. These findings suggest that fucoidan may be a potential functional food for colitis.

The research found two dominant types of microbiota in CDI and IBD patients, and observed the interaction between recipient and donor-derived microbiota during FMT.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of etrolizumab for maintenance of remission in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. The results showed no significant differences between maintenance etrolizumab and placebo in achieving remission at week 62 among patients with a clinical response at week 10. Etrolizumab was well tolerated in this population, with no new safety signals identified.

Pre-procedural use of thrombopoietin-receptor agonists in cirrhosis and severe thrombocytopenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of TPO agonists in cirrhotic patients with severe thrombocytopenia undergoing invasive procedures. Results showed that TPO agonists significantly reduced the need for peri-procedural platelet transfusion and increased platelet count pre-procedure, without increasing rates of adverse events.

Summary: The study demonstrated that lumen-apposing metal stents with an electrocautery-enhanced delivery system are safe and effective for drainage of various types of pancreatic fluid collections, although further endoscopic therapy is often needed for walled-off pancreatic necrosis. Major bleeding was a rare complication in the patient cohort.

Anti-tumour necrosis factor-induced skin rashes in inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review and evidence-based management algorithm

Summary: This systematic review examines the cutaneous complications of anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha (anti-TNF) therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and proposes a management algorithm. The review suggests that eczema can be managed with topical agents and anti-TNF therapy can be continued, while lupus requires immediate cessation of anti-TNF therapy and consideration of alternative treatments. Psoriasis and psoriasiform lesions may be managed using a step-wise algorithm, with topical treatments tried first and alternative anti-TNF therapy or a switch to a different class of biological agent considered if necessary.
