Background: The cumulus-oocyte complex plays a central role in the regulation of folliculogenesis where it is important for the maturation, reprogramming, and fertilization of oocytes. Consequently, cumulus cell gene expression profiling is being explored as a promising method for assessing oocyte competence in the near future. Through DNA microarray technology, we analyzed the potential differences in the gene expression profiles of cumulus cells from preovulatory follicles after controlled ovarian stimulation using different types of gonadotropins. Methods: A prospective, randomized study was performed among 90 women participating in an oocyte donation program. Subjects were assigned to receive recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), urinary FSH, or human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG). The gene expression profile in cumulus cells was analyzed according the type of gonadotropin received during ovarian stimulation. Furthermore, we also performed a gene ontology analysis to provide structural knowledge. Results: Hierarchical clustering, principal component analysis, and gene enrichment analysis revealed greater differences between the urinary FSH and hMG groups compared to the rest of the pair-wise comparisons; recombinant FSH vs hMG and urinary FSH vs recombinant FSH. Conclusions: Data suggest that controlled ovarian stimulation induces specific gene expression profiles in human cumulus cells depending on the type of gonadotropin used. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Summary: This study compared IVF outcomes in women with endometriosis undergoing fresh ET versus deferred ET after cryopreservation, finding no significant differences in patient characteristics and response to stimulation between the two groups. There were also no significant differences in implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and miscarriage rate between fresh and deferred ET groups. Prospective studies are needed to further validate these findings and improve IVF protocols for women with endometriosis.

Calcifediol (25OHD) Deficiency and Its Treatment in Women's Health and Fertility

Ana Arnanz, Juan A. Garcia-Velasco, Jose Luis Neyro

Summary: The vitamin D endocrine system plays a crucial role in human fertility, and its deficiency can be related to various reproductive issues. This deficiency has been linked to in vitro fertilization outcomes, ovarian reserve and fertility, and endocrine disorders such as polycystic ovary disease. It may also be associated with uterine fibroids and pregnancy-related complications. The optimal dose of vitamin D supplementation for infertility or during pregnancy is still uncertain, and further clinical studies are needed to determine its benefits and appropriate dosage.

Influence of telomerase activity and initial distribution on human follicular aging: Moving from a discrete to a continuum model

A. M. Portillo, E. Varela, J. A. Garcia-Velasco

Summary: This paper proposes a discrete model for the temporal evolution of a population of cells sorted according to their telomeric length. The model assumes asymmetric distribution of genetic material during cell division, with one daughter cell having the same telomere length as the mother and the other having shorter telomeres. The model takes into account telomerase activity, cell death, and the Hayflick limit. A partial differential equation with boundary conditions is derived to represent the continuous model. The model is applied to study the aging rate of human follicular growth.

Summary: Endometriosis affects more than 10% of women of reproductive age and significantly impacts their quality of life. Diagnosis often takes several years due to the invasive nature of the gold standard diagnostic method, laparoscopy. Two studies were conducted to develop a diagnostic test combining serum biomarkers and clinical variables, resulting in a specific and accurate test for early disease identification.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of the test-to-delivery interval on the performance of ultrasound and MRI in predicting birthweight. The results showed that MRI performed best in predicting birthweight greater than gestational age if delivery occurred within two weeks of the examination, with a slight decrease thereafter, while ultrasound performance decreased drastically over time.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate whether induction of labor is associated with a lower risk of cesarean section in patients with isolated polyhydramnios. The study found that planned induction was associated with a lower rate of cesarean delivery compared to expectant management, but the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, no differences were observed in maternal or fetal secondary outcomes.
