Summary: The study revealed that Citrobacter freundii CF74 infection activates NLRP3-dependent caspase 1 signaling cascade, leading to interleukin 1 beta production and pyroptosis. The T6SS plays a crucial role in mediating interleukin 1 beta secretion and the survival of mice during C. freundii infection.

Summary: This study successfully achieved highly pure synthesis of vanillic acid from vanillin using whole cells of Ochrobactrum anthropi strain T5_1, and further validated the anti-tyrosinase and cytotoxic properties of vanillic acid on B16F1 skin cell line. The study also revealed the possible mechanism underlying the cell toxicity of vanillic acid.

Summary: Pantothenic acid is converted to beta-alanine and (R)-pantoate, and then (R)-pantoate is transformed to aldopentoate in a reconstituted pathway identified through genomic enzymology strategy. The pathway genes, common in Proteobacterial genomes, are responsible for the biodegradation of pantothenic acid.

Summary: Three clusters of carbapenemase-producing Citrobacter freundii were detected in Finland during 2016-20, each with different carbapenemases and sequence types. Cases had no recent travel abroad, and environmental contamination may play a role in transmission, as suggested by the long intervals between cases.

Summary: A novel DON-degrading strain, named Citrobacter freundii (C. freundii-ON077584), was isolated from rice root-linked soil samples. C. freundii demonstrated the capability to degrade more than 90% of DON at pH 7 and an incubation temperature of 37 degrees C, and produced 3-keto-DON and DOM-1 as degraded products. Further research will explore the mechanism of DON degradation and identify novel degrading enzymes that can be cloned into microorganisms and added to animal feed for DON degradation in the digestive tract.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of photoelectrons on the growth and metabolism of Citrobacter freundii using a bioelectrochemical system. The results showed that photoelectrons significantly accelerated the growth rate of C. freundii and increased the concentrations of protein, humic acid, and NADH.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the molecular characterization, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity of an exopolysaccharide isolated from Citrobacter freundii. The new mannose rich exopolysaccharide with an average molecular weight was successfully isolated and its structure was determined. The study also discussed the antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, and their relationship with molecular properties of the exopolysaccharide.

Summary: The report presented a case of Ochrobactrum anthropi keratitis in a patient with a Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis. After 7 weeks of topical antimicrobial therapy and temporary tarsorrhaphy, the keratitis resolved. Ochrobactrum anthropi can be pathogenic in eyes with implanted keratoprostheses and is often associated with indwelling medical devices.

Summary: Multi-drug resistance is emerging in Citrobacter freundii in Finland, and this study found that wastewater surveillance could detect CP C. freundii strains causing infections in humans. CP C. freundii isolates were detected in the hospital environment and untreated municipal wastewater, but not in hospital wastewater. Genomic comparison revealed three clusters of isolates from different sources, suggesting the hospital environment as a source of transmission. The study emphasized the persistence of CP C. freundii throughout the sewerage system and the potential of WWS for detection.

Summary: A novel bacterium, Citrobacter freundii XY-1, capable of nitrogen removal without N2O accumulation, was successfully isolated and identified in this study. The results showed that XY-1 exhibited high efficiency in removing NH+4-N and total organic carbon, and its application significantly improved the performance of nitrogen removal. This bacterium has the potential to be an important candidate for upgrading wastewater treatment plants.

Summary: This study isolated a new strain that efficiently reduces dyes and Cr(VI) from textile wastewater, achieving high degradation and reduction efficiencies under specific conditions. Different metal ions and electron donors play different roles in promoting the degradation process. Through further investigation, the reduction mechanisms were revealed, with specific surface groups on the bacteria involved in the reduction process.
