Combined Plasma and Urinary Metabolomics Uncover Metabolic Perturbations Associated with Severe Respiratory Syncytial Viral Infection and Future Development of Asthma in Infant Patients

Shao Thing Teoh, Mara L. Leimanis-Laurens, Sarah S. Comstock, John W. Winters, Nikita L. Vandenbosch, Jeremy W. Prokop, Andre S. Bachmann, Sophia Y. Lunt, Surender Rajasekaran

Summary: This study compared metabolic perturbations in viral bronchiolitis and found unique changes in plasma and urine metabolites. The severity of the disease was correlated with specific metabolites, and urinary metabolites showed higher predictive power for future development of asthma.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of GI microbiome work in a pediatric intensive care unit and compared the GI microbiota composition of infants to control infants. The study found that the bacterial communities of PICU infants were less diverse than those of controls, with a loss of potentially protective populations.

Impact of charge character on anionic cyanine-based organic salt photovoltaics

Matthew Bates, Sophia Y. Y. Lunt, Richard R. R. Lunt

Summary: This study investigates organic salt photovoltaics by fabricating a group of unexplored organic salts and observing different donor and acceptor decay trends. Exciton diffusion and charge transfer are successfully quantified independently, demonstrating the important role of charge on the chromophore.

Counterion Tuning of Near-Infrared Organic Salts Dictates Phototoxicity to Inhibit Tumor Growth

Deanna Broadwater, Hyllana C. D. Medeiros, Matthew Bates, Amir Roshanzadeh, Shao Thing Teoh, Martin P. Ogrodzinski, Babak Borhan, Richard R. Lunt, Sophia Y. Lunt

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which combines photoactive agents and light, has the potential to enhance cancer treatment by providing dual selectivity. However, current limitations of PDT, such as low tissue penetration and insufficient phototoxicity, can hinder its effectiveness. In this study, researchers developed a platform that can modulate the properties of photoactive ions, and demonstrated its utility in vivo using a mouse model of breast cancer. By pairing a near-infrared (NIR) photoactive cation with specific counterions, the researchers successfully generated a selectively phototoxic photosensitizer that inhibits tumor growth with minimal side effects. This work provides a proof of concept for improving cancer photosensitizers using the counterion pairing platform.

Phosphorescent Metal Halide Nanoclusters for Tunable Photodynamic Therapy

Hyllana C. D. Medeiros, Chenchen Yang, Christopher K. Herrera, Deanna Broadwater, Elliot Ensink, Matthew Bates, Richard R. Lunt, Sophia Y. Lunt

Summary: This study introduces a phosphorescent octahedral molybdenum (Mo)-based nanoclusters as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). By modulating the apical ligand, the nanoclusters show tunability in cellular cytotoxicity and phototoxicity, and exhibit effective PDT against various aggressive cancer cells.

Targeting Subtype-Specific Metabolic Preferences in Nucleotide Biosynthesis Inhibits Tumor Growth in a Breast Cancer Model

Martin P. Ogrodzinski, Shao Thing Teoh, Sophia Y. Lunt

Summary: This study investigated metabolic differences between histologic subtypes of breast cancer, identifying preferences for different nucleotide metabolism pathways. Targeting the preferred pathways in each subtype had a greater impact on tumor growth, highlighting the potential for subtype-specific treatment strategies based on metabolic vulnerabilities.
