Radiologist observations of computed tomography (CT) images predict treatment outcome in TB Portals, a real-world database of tuberculosis (TB) cases

Gabriel Rosenfeld, Andrei Gabrielian, Qinlu Wang, Jingwen Gu, Darrell E. Hurt, Alyssa Long, Alex Rosenthal

Summary: The study analyzed TB cases using clinical characteristics, CT images, and radiologist observations from a database, finding that these observations can predict treatment outcomes. It also identified markers of TB disease spread associated with poor treatment outcomes, suggesting the need for further data collection to address potential confounding factors.

Genomic analyses of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from human lung resections reveal a high frequency of polyclonal infections

Miguel Moreno-Molina, Natalia Shubladze, Iza Khurtsilava, Zaza Avaliani, Nino Bablishvili, Manuela Torres-Puente, Luis Villamayor, Andrei Gabrielian, Alex Rosenthal, Cristina Vilaplana, Sebastien Gagneux, Russell R. Kempker, Sergo Vashakidze, Inaki Comas

Summary: Polyclonal infections, where at least two unrelated strains of the same pathogen are detected in an individual, have been linked to worse clinical outcomes in tuberculosis. Analysis of samples from tuberculosis patients in Georgia by Moreno-Molina et al. showed that the magnitude of polyclonal infections may be underestimated when only testing sputum samples.

Patterns of genomic interrelatedness of publicly available samples in the TB portals database

Kurt R. Wollenberg, Brendan M. Jeffrey, Michael A. Harris, Andrei Gabrielian, Darrell E. Hurt, Alex Rosenthal

Summary: The TB Portals program is an international collaboration that focuses on collecting and disseminating tuberculosis data, with a particular emphasis on drug resistance. By analyzing pathogen genomic data, researchers can gain insights into genetic variations between phylogenomic lineages and explore international transmission. These genomic-relatedness views provide valuable information for further research.
