Cigarette smoking has been implicated in causing many cancers and cancer deaths. There is mounting evidence indicating that smoking negatively impacts cancer treatment efficacy and overall survival. The NCCN Guidelines for Smoking Cessation have been created to emphasize the importance of smoking cessation and establish an evidence-based standard of care in all patients with cancer. These guidelines provide recommendations to address smoking in patients and outlines behavioral and pharmacologic interventions for smoking cessation throughout the continuum of oncology care.

Summary: The study reveals the impact of cancer on severe COVID-19 outcomes and analyzes how it varies based on patient and cancer characteristics. Current cancer is associated with severe outcomes while past cancer is not. The risk of death is higher for current cancer compared to past cancer, especially among younger patients. COVID-19 vaccination reduces the risk of death.

Summary: The present study examines the association between pharmacogenetic interactions and 90-day readmission, taking into account social determinants and medical comorbidity. The results indicate that social determinants and medical complexity contribute significantly to the risk of hospital readmission, and they may modify the effect of gene-drug interactions on rehospitalization risk.

Summary: This pilot study aimed to implement a computerized tobacco cessation strategy within a federally qualified health center using the Implementation Mapping (IM) method. Despite initial indicators of acceptability, the intervention was not adopted within the study timeframe, likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned include the importance of reassessing barriers over time and allowing for a longer observation period for implementation outcomes.

Summary: This study utilized global genetic diversity data to discover and fine-map genomic loci associated with tobacco and alcohol use. Ancestry-aware transcriptome-wide association studies were conducted to understand the function of these loci. The study also evaluated the genetic architecture and predictive power of polygenic risk in different populations. The results demonstrated that increasing sample size and genetic diversity improved the identification and fine-mapping of loci, but polygenic risk scores performed poorly across different ancestries.

It's a decision I have to make: Patient perspectives on smoking and cessation after lung cancer screening decisions

Sara E. Golden, Liana Schweiger, Anne C. Melzer, Sarah S. Ono, Santanu Datta, James M. Davis, Christopher G. Slatore

Summary: Few studies have shown a direct link between lung cancer screening (LCS) and changes in smoking rates. This study aimed to investigate whether teachable moments for smoking cessation occur after LCS decision-making discussions. The findings suggest that LCS discussions have limited impact on patients' motivation to quit smoking, and other factors play a more significant role in smoking cessation.

Summary: Previous studies have provided inconsistent findings on the association between smoking and COVID-19 clinical outcomes. This large cohort study suggests that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination may have greater benefits in improving hospital outcomes for current and former smokers, and nicotine replacement therapy may reduce mortality for current smokers during COVID-19 hospitalization.
