Species diversity within the genus Osmundea in the Macaronesian region was explored by conducting a comprehensive sampling in the Azores, the Canary, and the Madeira archipelagos. Toward identification, all specimens were first observed alive to verify the absence of corps en cerise, a diagnostic character for the genus and morphometric data were measured (thallus length and width, first-order branches length and width, branchlets length and width, cortical cell length and width in surface view, cortical cell length and width in transverse section). Specimens were sequenced for COI-5P (39 specimens) and three species delimitation methods (Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery method, and Poisson Tree Processes) were used to assess the threshold between infra- and interspecific relationships. Subsequently, one or several sequences of plastid-encoded large subunit of RuBisCO (21 specimens) per delimited species were generated to assess the phylogenetic relationships among Macaronesian Osmundea. Moreover, for each delineated species, vegetative and reproductive anatomy was thoroughly documented and, when possible, specimens were either assigned to existing taxa or described as novel species. This integrative approach has provided data for (i) the presence of O.oederi, O.pinnatifida, and O.truncata in Macaronesia; (ii) the proposal of two novel species, O.prudhommevanreinei sp. nov. and O.silvae sp. nov.; and (iii) evidence of an additional species referred as Osmundea sp.1, which is a sister taxon of O.hybrida.

Comparison of the diversity and biomass of beach-cast seaweeds from NE and SE Brazil

Maria Irisvalda Leal Gondim Cavalcanti, Patricia Maria Gonzalez Sanchez, Mutue Toyota Fujii

Summary: This study compared the diversity, coverage, and biomass of beached seaweeds on the north-eastern and south-eastern coasts of Brazil. The results showed that while the north-eastern coast had higher species richness, the south-eastern coast exhibited higher coverage and biomass. The frequency and distribution of beached seaweeds varied significantly across beaches in Brazil, providing insights into their biodiversity and biomass and their potential economic use in the future.

Thermal tolerance of Hypnea pseudomusciformis ecotypes (Cystocloniaceae, Rhodophyta) related to different floristic provinces along the Brazilian coast

Fabio Nauer, Mariana Cabral Oliveira, Estela Maria Plastino, Nair Sumie Yokoya, Mutue Toyota Fujii

Summary: The effects of temperature on physiological processes in Hypnea pseudomusciformis were studied. Different ecotypes displayed decreased physiological performance at 32 degrees C. The wide thermal optimum of this species may explain its widespread distribution along the Brazilian coast.

MOLECULAR ASSESSMENT OF THE SPECIES OF GRACILARIACEAE (GRACILARIALES, RHODOPHYTA) FROM THE YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO, INCLUDING TWO NEW RECORDS FOR THE MEXICAN ATLANTIC

Martha Vilchis, Kurt M. Dreckmann, Oscar E. Hernandez, Carlos A. Palma Ortiz, Maria Luisa Nunez Resendiz, Abel Senties

Summary: This study genetically identified 10 species of Gracilariaceae in the Yucatan Peninsula and discovered 2 new records for the Mexican Atlantic. The molecular assessment proved to be a useful tool for evaluating the diversity of Gracilariaceae species.

Morphometric analysis of five species of the Gracilaria mammillaris complex (Gracilariaceae, Rhodophyta) in the Mexican Atlantic

Martha Isabel Vilchis, Kurt M. Dreckmann, Abel Senties

Summary: This study used morphometric analysis to determine the existence of characters that distinguish five species of the Gracilaria mammillaris complex in the Mexican Atlantic. The results showed that only Gracilaria curtissiae differs significantly from the other species in the complex. The study suggests that an ongoing speciation process may be responsible for the lack of distinguishable morphological traits in most of the studied species.

New records of marine macroalgae for the Azores

Ana Neto, Eva Cacabelos, Afonso C. L. Prestes, Pilar Diaz-Tapia, Ignacio Moreu

Summary: The present study adds 19 species to the marine macroalgal flora in the Azores, increasing the total number of species in this region to 521. Some of the newly found species fall within their known distributional range, while others represent an extension to their distribution in the Atlantic. Several of the species are likely introductions to the Azores, and the status of one species is uncertain. The discovery of six new species in intertidal algal turf samples highlights the importance of further research in this area.

Digenea nana sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta), a new turf-forming, coral reef species from the Western Tropical Atlantic

Luanda Pereira Soares, Pilar Diaz-Tapia, Alain Duran, Mutue Toyota Fujii, Ligia Collado-Vides

Summary: The addition of molecular data to taxonomic studies has led to the discovery of a new turf-forming species, which was previously considered widely distributed but is actually a complex of several distinct species. This highlights the importance of integrating molecular and morpho-anatomical studies to reveal new taxa.

Biecheleriopsis adriatica (Dinophyceae: Suessiaceae): the first record from the Eastern Pacific Ocean

Mary Carmen Ruiz-de la Torre, Maria Luisa Nunez Resendiz, Kurt M. Dreckmann, Abel Senties, Maria Eugenia Zamudio-Resendiz, Alexis Escarcega-Bata

Summary: This study documented the presence of Biecheleriopsis adriatica and Suessiales order for the first time in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly in Todos Santos Bay, northwestern Mexico. Molecular analysis and cell morphology examination confirmed the identity and suggested underestimated diversity of Suessiales in the region.

Taxonomic changes in the Lomentariaceae (Rhodymeniales, Rhodophyta): Yendoa gen. nov. and Ceratodictyon sanctae-crucis sp. nov.

Cibele Conceicao dos Santos, Jose Marcos de Castro Nunes, Gabriel do Nascimento Santos, Edilene Maria dos Santos Pestana, Valeria Cassano, Goia de Mattos Lyra

Summary: This study conducted molecular, genetic, and morphological analyses of Lomentariaceae, resulting in the discovery of a new species, Ceratodictyon sanctae-crucis sp. nov., and the proposal of a new genus, Yendoa gen. nov., within Lomentariaceae. The study also revealed that Lomentariaceae now consists only of monophyletic genera, providing a more coherent taxonomic framework for the family.

Ultrastructural characterization of Minutocellus polymorphus (Cymatosiraceae, Bacillariophyta) and first record from the Eastern Pacific

Sinuhe Hernandez-Marquez, Maria Eugenia Zamudio-Resendiz, Maria Luisa Nunez-Resendiz, Alexis Escarcega-Bata, Abel Senties

Summary: The diatom Minutocellus polymorphus is a widely studied species that is an ideal model for toxicity tests due to its rapid growth. Although its gross morphology has been extensively described, the ultrastructural characters associated with its importance are unknown. Through a collection made in Acapulco Bay, Guerrero, Mexico, cells morphologically identical to M. polymorphus were isolated, and a first description of the genus' ultrastructure was provided through cultures and observations in a transmission electron microscope. Further detailed studies are needed to increase knowledge about the ultrastructure of diatoms on the Mexican Pacific coasts where they are previously unknown.
