Summary: Empagliflozin (EMPA) therapy has been shown to improve non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. This study investigated the functional implications of EMPA on the pathogenesis of NAFLD and identified the underlying molecular mechanisms. The results showed that EMPA treatment reversed liver damage by upregulating Sestrin2 and activating the AMPK-mTOR pathway, leading to the inhibition of lipogenesis and inflammation. These findings suggest that EMPA therapy could target Sestrin2 to alleviate lipogenesis and inflammation in obesity-related NAFLD.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intestinal flora and its metabolites on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the therapeutic effect of Shenling Baizhu powder (SLBZP) on NAFLD. The results showed that short-chain fatty acids produced by intestinal flora metabolism improved liver mitochondrial energy metabolism through regulating the UCP2/AMPK/IF1 signaling pathway, thereby reducing liver lipid deposition and increasing liver ATP level in NAFLD patients.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease characterized by excess fat accumulation in the liver. It is associated with metabolic syndrome and often presents with comorbidities such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. NAFLD is also linked to non-liver comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and sleep apnea. Managing these comorbidities is crucial for improving liver-related and overall health outcomes in patients with NAFLD.

Summary: The study demonstrated that chronic dietary nitrate can attenuate the progression of liver steatosis in ApoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Additionally, mice supplemented with nitrate showed increased hepatic AMPK activity, improved hepatic lipid accumulation, and notable differences in bile acid profile compared to those on the HFD alone.

Summary: Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor used in breast cancer treatment, has been reported to cause metabolic changes and structural remodeling in the heart. Our study found that letrozole exposure in female rats resulted in decreased fatty acid oxidation, increased glycolysis, and left ventricular hypertrophy. This shift in cardiac metabolism may lead to reduced energy supply and increased risk of heart failure.

Summary: Inflammation is a natural defense mechanism, but chronic inflammation can lead to various chronic diseases. Neuroinflammation in the central nervous system is important in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Polyphenol-rich natural products, such as Ecklonia cava, have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can be used to control neuroinflammation in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we found that Ecklonia cava extract can reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and markers of inflammation and neurodegeneration in mice with chronic inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide.

Excessive ER stress leads to cell death and chronic disease development. Curcumin regulates ER stress and inflammation, exerting neuroprotective effects. Investigating the effects of curcumin on ER stress, inflammation, and neurodegeneration is therefore important.
