Summary: This study investigates the negotiations and emotional burdens experienced by Black and Latinx pre-service physical education (PE) teachers in predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Using Critical Race Theory, Critical Whiteness Studies, and emotionality, the researchers found that these teachers engage in self-preservation and emotional distancing when confronted with overwhelming whiteness in their PE programs. Over time, cracks in their positive narratives emerged as they revealed the pain caused by consistent experiences of racism in their PWIs. The results highlight the multi-layered emotionality that participants face, masked to fit into their white educational communities.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in occupational socialization among pre-service physical education teachers in different year groups. The study found that younger pre-service teachers felt more prepared and believed more in the benefits of professional development compared to their older counterparts. Acculturation had a critical influence on the occupational socialization of the pre-service teachers. The lack of early field experience may explain why older students felt less confident than their younger counterparts.

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship among gratitude, meaning in life, career calling, and career goal self-efficacy of pre-service teachers in the Free Teacher Education program in China, as well as the internal mechanism. The results indicate that gratitude is positively correlated with meaning in life and career calling, while meaning in life is positively correlated with career calling. Gratitude, meaning in life, and career calling are significantly and positively associated with career goal self-efficacy. Gratitude influences pre-service teachers' career goal self-efficacy through the independent mediator of meaning in life and career calling, as well as the chain mediator of meaning in life and career calling.

Summary: This study examines how pre-service teachers deal with pupil diversity during their practicum in secondary schools and how university courses support this process. The study reveals that university teaching helps pre-service teachers adopt a positive attitude towards pupil diversity and they succeed in addressing the needs of certain groups of students. However, the study also finds that pre-service teachers unevenly consider the needs of students and tend to homogenize their teaching during the practicum due to inadequacies in the university curriculum.

Summary: This study examined the border crossing process of five minoritized female pre-service teachers as they transitioned from learning to teach science to teaching science for the first time. The analysis revealed three negotiated meanings that underscored the participants' border crossings: expectations for an effective science teacher, expectations for student learning, and expectations for an equity-based science learning environment. The implications include the need to identify and examine past science learning experiences within teacher education programs and to investigate how these experiences influence perceptions of learning to teach science.

Summary: This critical narrative review explores the pedagogies used by PE teachers and PETE educators during the COVID-19 pandemic, examining them through the lens of bell hooks' engaged pedagogy. A total of 86 articles were reviewed, with 38 articles meeting the inclusion criteria for data extraction. The study utilized both inductive and deductive methods of data analysis. The findings reveal a lack of evidence supporting the adoption of engaged pedagogy in PE and PETE during COVID-19, with a focus on day-to-day survival rather than transformative and meaningful learning. The review highlights the need for PE teachers and PETE educators to develop equitable, inclusive, and empathetic classroom spaces.

Summary: This paper contributes to youth participatory action research (YPAR) by using bell hooks' engaged pedagogy to illustrate the process of co-designing a program for transition beyond secondary school. Engaged pedagogy combines critical consciousness and radical wholeness to foster a learning community. The research findings show that YPAR, informed by engaged pedagogy, raised critical consciousness and allowed for the demonstration of radical wholeness, leading to a more holistic approach in education.
