BACKGROUND: This paper details the results of solubilization of phosphates in spent mushroom substrate (SMS). As a substrate for the process, bones as a source of phosphates and SMS as medium were used. RESULTS: The process was conducted for 9 months and at the end of the process the substrate obtained was characterized as having a two times higher amount of available phosphorus (express as P2O5), which was confirmed by FTIR and SEM-EDX analysis. A decrease in pH was observed. Strong correlation was found between temperature and the effectiveness of the process (P= 0.000, r= 0.772). Solubilization combined with the degradation process lowered the C/N ratio from 13.6: 1 to 11.7: 1. The utilitarian properties of the substrate obtained were evaluated in germination tests. CONCLUSION: The substrate obtained was characterized as having two times more available phosphorus and can serve as a biofertilizer for the cultivation of plants. Biodegradation of pharmaceuticals in photobioreactors - a systematic literature review

Katarzyna Chojnacka, Dawid Skrzypczak, Grzegorz Izydorczyk, Katarzyna Mikula, Daniel Szopa, Konstantinos Moustakas, Anna Witek-Krowiak

Summary: This work is a systematic review that provides an overview of the latest techniques for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water and wastewater using photosynthetic organisms in photobioreactors. The review analyzed the most recent literature data from the last 10 years (2011-2021) using the PRISMA protocol. The main findings of the review are that the high costs and low efficiency associated with low concentrations of pharmaceuticals are major factors limiting the widespread use of photobioreactors for pharmaceutical removal. The review also highlights the need for further research to address the potential risks posed by increasing amounts of metabolites in the food chain.

From hazardous waste to fertilizer: Recovery of high-value metals from smelter slags

Katarzyna Mikula, Dawid Skrzypczak, Grzegorz Izydorczyk, Sylwia Basladynska, Konrad Szustakiewicz, Katarzyna Gorazda, Konstantinos Moustakas, Katarzyna Chojnacka, Anna Witek-Krowiak

Summary: This work proposes a method to valorize lead slag by selectively recovering valuable microelements while retaining toxic elements. The slag was treated with potassium hydrogen sulfate and ammonia liquor under strongly oxidizing conditions to achieve effective leaching. Response Surface Methodology was used to optimize the leaching conditions. The extracts obtained from the leaching process showed promising potential as alternative sources of micronutrients for fertilizer production.

Summary: According to the concept of circular economy, the production of fertilizers should be done in a closed loop to minimize environmental impact. The collection and transport of biological wastes pose challenges as they emit greenhouse gases and pose health hazards. This study reviews the use of biochar in fertilizers and proposes soil application as the best method for biochar management, highlighting its advantages in improving soil quality, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing plant growth.

Summary: This paper presents a method of converting leather tannery wastes into biochar and enriching the biochar with micronutrients using a spray method. The enriched biochar exhibited high bioavailability of nutrients and showed effective fertilizer performance in both in vitro and in vivo tests. This method aligns with the concept of circular economy and has environmental benefits.
