Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted from plants, containing bioactive compounds that have various biological activities. They have potential applications in pharmaceutical, medical, and food industries, particularly as antimicrobial agents and food preservatives.
Essential oils (EOs) are volatile and concentrated liquids extracted from different parts of plants. Bioactive compounds found in EOs, especially terpenes and terpenoids possess a wide range of biological activities including anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiallergic. Available literature confirms that EOs exhibit antimicrobial and food preservative properties that are considered as a real potential application in food industry. Hence, the purpose of this review is to present an overview of current knowledge of EOs for application in pharmaceutical and medical industries as well as their potential as food preservatives in food industry.

Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Origin in Pediatric Age Group: Recent Outbreaks and Approach to Management

Neil Patel, Yashendra Sethi, Nirja Kaka, Oroshay Kaiwan, Ishita Gupta, Rahma Sameh Shaheen, Shady Sapoor, Hitesh Chopra, Mihaela Simona Popoviciu, Talha Bin Emran, Simona Cavalu

Summary: Acute hepatitis is a growing concern with recent outbreaks affecting pediatric populations in around 35 countries, including developed nations. The outbreaks have been associated with devastating liver failure in approximately 10% of affected patients. Clinical presentation resembles typical acute hepatitis symptoms, but tests have come back negative for known hepatitis viruses, leading to the term non-HepA-E hepatitis. Adenovirus and SARS-CoV-2 have been identified as potential causes. International efforts are underway to establish diagnostic and management protocols to control these outbreaks. This comprehensive review aims to provide evidence-based conclusions to assist clinicians.

Updated Insights into the T Cell-Mediated Immune Response against SARS-CoV-2: A Step towards Efficient and Reliable Vaccines

Manish Dhawan, Ali A. Rabaan, Mahmoud M. Al Fawarah, Souad A. Almuthree, Roua A. Alsubki, Amal H. Alfaraj, Mutaib M. Mashraqi, Saleh A. Alshamrani, Wesam A. Abduljabbar, Ameen S. S. Alwashmi, Fatimah Al Ibrahim, Abdulmonem A. Alsaleh, Faryal Khamis, Jameela Alsalman, Manish Sharma, Talha Bin Emran

Summary: The emergence of novel variants of SARS-CoV-2 and their ability to evade the immune response makes it essential to understand the mechanisms of interaction between the virus and the human immune system. This understanding is crucial for the development of effective vaccines against COVID-19. T cells play a critical role in reducing viral load and containing the infection, but their hyperactivation and reduced numbers are associated with severe disease. The involvement of T cells in determining the prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the strategies to enhance T cell-mediated immune responses are still not fully understood.

Short-term exposure of Cannabidiol on Zebrafish (Danio Rerio): Reproductive Toxicity

Lin Li, Bei Fan, Zhiqiang Kong, Yifan Zhang, Mengying Zhao, Jesus Simal-Gandara, Fengzhong Wang, Minmin Li

Summary: This study investigated the reproductive toxicity of CBD on adult zebrafish. The results showed that CBD treatment led to a decrease in spawning, higher natural mortality, and malformation rates in female zebrafish. Both male and female zebrafish experienced changes in gonadosomatic index, content of vitellogenin, and sex hormone synthesis genes. Apoptosis-related genes were upregulated in the brain, gonad, and liver of zebrafish. These findings suggest that CBD can damage reproductive function by inducing an apoptotic response and inhibiting zebrafish reproductive ability.
