Summary: This study analyzed the nutritional profiles, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity of common verbena and lemon verbena leaves. The results showed that lemon verbena had higher nutritional value, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity compared to common verbena. Additionally, aqueous extracts showed better results than hydromethanolic ones.

Summary: The destructive effect and mode of action of lemon verbena essential oil on cells were investigated using Pseudosciaena D4 as the research subject. The oil destroyed the integrity of Pseudosciaena D4 cells, prevented biomembrane formation and destroyed formed biomembranes. The concentration of oil inhibited the secretion of extracellular polysaccharide during biomembrane formation. The oil increased cell permeability, leading to leakage of contents and cell death.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between ferroptosis and premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) caused by cisplatin (CDDP) and the potential therapeutic effect of vitamin E (VE). The results showed that CDDP induced ovarian tissue fibrosis and follicle development disorders along with impaired ovarian function, while VE could reverse these reproductive toxicities. Furthermore, molecular experiments revealed that ferroptosis-related molecules ACSl4, ALOX15, SLC7A11, and GPX4 were differentially expressed, suggesting their involvement in the mechanism of POI.

Summary: This study found that smoking increases oxidative stress levels and reduces the balance of glutathione in both mothers and newborns. Lower levels of reductase were observed in smoking groups, while GPx-3 levels were decreased in newborns exposed to tobacco smoke in utero. This suggests that oxidative stress from tobacco smoke can negatively impact glutathione homeostasis and antioxidant balance in newborns.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant potential, phenolic profile, and free amino acid profile of lemon verbena infusions from different commercial brands. Various assays showed that the infusions exhibited high antioxidant activity, which was correlated with total phenolics and total flavonoid contents. Phenylalanine also appeared to have an impact on the antioxidant activity. Significant differences were found among the evaluated parameters for one of the commercial brands, possibly due to different geographical origins. Overall, lemon verbena infusions contain a variety of bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential.

Summary: Age is a significant risk factor for cataracts, and proper regulation of oxidative stress is crucial for maintaining lens clarity. The lens contains high levels of antioxidants, such as ascorbate and glutathione, which help the lens stay clear, especially in young individuals. This study summarizes the functional and genetic evidence supporting the hypothesis that impaired oxidative stress regulation leads to redox dysregulation and cataracts. The roles of endogenous antioxidant glutathione and exogenous antioxidant vitamin C/ascorbate, as well as the transcription factor NRF2 in cataract development, are discussed.

Summary: The addition of lemon verbena essential oil to Arbequina extra-virgin olive oils improved antioxidant and total reducing capacities but also increased primary and secondary quality parameters. However, the essential oil incorporation negatively influenced the oxidation of oils, decreasing their oxidative stability. The study also showed that unflavored oils had significantly lower oxidation reaction rates and different thermodynamic properties compared to flavored oils.

Summary: In humans, there are eight glutathione peroxidases (GPXs), and five of them are selenoproteins that play a crucial role in cellular redox homeostasis. Among the three main cytosolic GPXs, GPX1 and GPX2 reduce soluble hydroperoxides, while GPX4 reduces complex lipid hydroperoxides. The experiments show that GPX1 has the highest activity in reducing soluble and fatty-acid derived hydroperoxides among these isoforms.

Summary: The study investigated the phytochemical properties of lemon verbena and the oxidative stability of the fat component in cookies containing lemon verbena powder and essential oil (EO). The results showed that lemon verbena had positive effects on the aroma and taste of cookies during storage, and could prolong the shelf life, but lemon verbena powder had adverse effects on mouthfeel and consumer acceptance.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of GPX3 and its correlation with VD-VDR in I/R-induced renal oxidative stress injury. The results showed that the expression of GPX3 and VDR was consistently decreased in renal tissues of I/R-related AKI patients and mice models. VDR agonist paricalcitol could reverse GPX3 expression and inhibit oxidative stress in I/R mice or H/R insulted HK-2 cells. VDR deficiency resulted in aggregated oxidative stress and severer renal injury accompanied by further decreased renal GPX3, while tubular-specific VDR overexpression remarkably reduced I/R-induced renal injury with recovered GPX3 in mice.

Summary: In this study, replacing pasteurized waste milk with transition milk (TM) was found to improve growth performance and health of dairy calves. Calves fed higher levels of TM showed increased body weight gain, higher feed efficiency, and lower incidence of diarrhea compared to the control group. These findings suggest that providing TM to dairy calves at an early stage of life could support higher growth rates and health benefits.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of forage and concentrate with pomegranate pulp silage and dried pomegranate seed pulp on the performance of fattening Mehraban lambs. The results showed that using pomegranate pulp silage and dried pomegranate seed pulp in the diets could decrease dietary cost without any negative impact on animal performance.
