Summary: The PERSIAN birth cohort study in Iran aims to evaluate the associations between socio-economic characteristics, lifestyle, diet, environmental exposures, and epigenetic factors with various outcomes related to pregnancy, maternal and child health, child neurodevelopment, and chronic disease risk factors. The study plans to recruit 15,000 mother-offspring pairs and follow them for at least ten years, collecting data through three phases from periconception to childhood, including biological samples and growth monitoring. Appropriate data analysis schemes will be employed for assessing early life factors in health and disease for international comparisons.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and investigate the influence of clinical information and laboratory findings on AKI incidence and mortality. The study found that diabetes, hyperkalemia, higher levels of WBC count, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) increased the incidence of AKI, while a joint association of severe/mild/moderate COVID-19 with ICU admission, hypokalemia, and higher levels of BUN, WBC, and LDH measured at hospital admission were associated with increased mortality risk in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of black tea consumption on urinary risk factors for kidney stone formation, and found that in normal subjects, black tea intake did not significantly increase the risk of kidney stone formation. Additionally, black tea consumption did not significantly alter 24-h urinary oxalate excretion, but led to a significant increase in urinary citrate, an important inhibitor of calcium stone formation.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the association between fish consumption and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, and found that increased fish consumption may protect against CRC development. Preclinical studies also identified multiple mechanisms through which fish components can inhibit colorectal carcinogenesis. These findings have important implications for dietary recommendations for cancer prevention.

Summary: This meta-analysis identified 12 risk factors related to the recurrence of kidney stone disease, including younger age, higher BMI, family history, personal history, hypertension, uric acid stone, and others. Patients with higher BMI, personal history of nephrolithiasis, or surgery history were found to have a higher risk of radiographic kidney stone disease recurrence.

Summary: This research investigated whether questions related to the urinary or gut microbiome and urinary stone disease (USD) can be answered through metagenome-wide association studies (MWAS). The study found significant differences in microbiome composition based on factors like USD status, stone composition, age group, and study location. Results indicate the importance of standardizing experimental protocols in the field to assess microbiome differences accurately.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between white meat consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors and found that consuming fresh lean white meat may have potential beneficial effects on these risk factors. However, there are still controversial findings in existing studies, and future research should further investigate the association between white meat consumption habits and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Summary: Occupational cancers in Iran are still in an early stage of epidemiology. Studies on exposure monitoring and epidemiology are limited in size, thus unable to provide strong evidence of occupational cancer risks. It is necessary to estimate the burden of occupational cancer in Iran through conducting epidemiological studies and systematically monitoring occupational carcinogens.
