The choice of receptor populations is crucial for assessing the health risk posed by heavy metals in soil. Exposure risk varied among different receptor populations due to their exposure frequency and exposure time values. Green maintenance workers, sanitation workers, and children were found to be the most sensitive receptor populations in parks, residential areas, roadsides, and farmlands.
The choice of receptor populations is crucial for assessing the health risk posed by heavy metals in soil. A total of 457 questionnaires were conducted on 10 sensitive receptor populations, which were exposed to potentially contaminated soil under four land uses, to determine their exposure frequency (EF) and exposure time (ET) values. The exposure risk (ER: the probability of being exposed to target soil) varied between the receptor populations because of their different EF and ET values. Green maintenance workers in park soil, who had fixed outdoor working hours (6 or 7 days per week and 8 h per day), had the highest EF and ET values, while adults and children who visited parks only at weekends had the lowest EF values. Green maintenance workers, sanitation workers, and children faced the highest hazards (i.e., hazard index (HI) values) from heavy metals in soil in parks and residential areas, roadsides, and farmland, and were found to be the most sensitive receptor populations (MSRPs) for these land uses. The 90th percentile of the HI value for the four land uses based on MSRPs followed the order of roadsides (0.48) > parks (0.44) > residential areas (0.21) > suburban farmlands(0.18), and all were lower than 1, indicating a virtually safe level. Washing hands immediately and wearing shoes when working on farmland considerably reduced the HI values by 56.6%. The EF, ET, and body weight (BW) values were the most sensitive parameters in the health risk assessment. The results suggested that the type of receptor population will greatly affect the results of a health risk assessment for soil pollutants. It is necessary to select the risk receptors carefully based on the land use types. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: The study assessed the contamination and health risks of heavy metals in soils around various types of non-ferrous smelteries in China, finding that some provinces had severe soil pollution exceeding standards, especially around copper smelteries. Strategies to control soil pollution around non-ferrous smelteries should primarily focus on Cd and Pb.

Adsorption of Cd on Soils with Various Particle Sizes from an Abandoned Non-ferrous Smelting Site: Characteristics and Mechanism

Zhichao Jiang, Zhaohui Guo, Chi Peng, Richmond Anaman, Hongzhen Ran, Xiyuan Xiao

Summary: Soil particle size has a significant impact on the adsorption of Cd in soils, with larger particles having lower adsorption capacity. Cd adsorption is related to the exchange with Fe/Al in the soil, and -OH/C=O sites are the main adsorption sites. Miscellaneous fill in zinc smelting sites may pose a secondary pollution risk due to its low adsorption ability for Cd.

Comparison of heavy metals in urban soil and dust in cities of China: characteristics and health risks

Y. He, C. Peng, Y. Zhang, Z. Guo, X. Xiao, L. Kong

Summary: By collecting heavy metal data from soil and dust samples in 34 cities in China, this study found that the concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in urban street dust were generally higher than those in urban soil. The main reasons for the high metal concentrations in some cities were the development of metal processing and smelting industries, manufacturing, and the relocation of heavily polluting enterprises. The heavy metal concentrations in urban soil were not correlated with those in urban dust, indicating different long-term and short-term sources of pollution. In most cities, the non-carcinogenic risk of heavy metals in urban soil and dust for children was at a safe level, with lead being the major contributor to total health risk.

Estimation of the accumulation rates and health risks of heavy metals in residential soils of three metropolitan cities in China

Chi Peng, Kai Zhang, Meie Wang, Xinxing Wan, Weiping Chen

Summary: Heavy metal concentrations in urban soils are likely to increase due to urbanization and emissions. The accumulation rates of heavy metals in urban soils varied among cities and were influenced by soil parent material and anthropogenic sources. Cd and Cu accumulation rates were similar across the three cities, while Zn and Pb accumulation rates were higher in Shanghai. Although urbanization led to elevated concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb in residential soils, the overall health risks for residents were negligible.

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
