Perilla seed oil, a popular health food in South Korea, contains various fatty acids. By using association analysis of SSR markers, several markers associated with fatty acid content in Perilla seed oil were identified, which can be useful for improving seed oil quality in Perilla crops through MAS breeding programs.
Perilla seed oil has been attracting attention in South Korea as a health food. Five fatty acids of 100 Perilla accessions were identified as follows: palmitic acid (PA) (5.10-9.13%), stearic acid (SA) (1.70-3.99%), oleic acid (OA) (11.1-21.9%), linoleic acid (LA) (10.2-23.4%), and linolenic acid (LNA) (54.3-75.4%). Additionally, the 100 Perilla accessions were divided into two groups (high or low) based on the total fatty acid content (TFAC). By using an association analysis of 40 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and the six Perilla seed oil traits in the 100 Perilla accessions, we detected four SSR markers associated with TFAC, five SSR markers associated with LNA, one SSR marker associated with LA, two SSR markers each associated with OA and PA, and four SSR markers associated with SA. Among these SSR markers, four SSR markers (KNUPF14, KNUPF62, KNUPF72, KNUPF85) were all associated with TFAC and LNA. Moreover, two SSR markers (KNUPF62, KNUPF85) were both associated with TFAC, LNA, and OA. Therefore, these SSR markers are considered to be useful molecular markers for selecting useful accessions related to fatty acid contents in Perilla germplasm and for improving the seed oil quality of Perilla crop through marker-assisted selection (MAS) breeding programs.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Normal Maize Germplasm Collected in South Sudan Revealed by SSR Markers

Emmanuel Andrea Mathiang, Kyu Jin Sa, Hyeon Park, Yeon Joon Kim, Ju Kyong Lee

Summary: Maize cultivation in South Sudan relies on undeveloped varieties, leading to low yields. This study analyzed the genetic diversity and population structures of 37 landrace maize accessions in South Sudan. The findings revealed moderate genetic differentiation among maize populations and high differentiation within groups of populations in different regions. The clustering of maize accessions showed consistency with their collection area. This study provides valuable insights for maize breeders and genetic resource preservation in South Sudan.

Uncovering microsatellite markers associated with agronomic traits of South Sudan landrace maize

Emmanuel Andrea Mathiang, Hyeon Park, So Jung Jang, Jungeun Cho, Tae Hyeon Heo, Ju Kyong Lee

Summary: This study investigated genetic variation and population structure among 31 maize accessions using 50 SSR markers and seven quantitative agronomic traits. The results showed abundant genetic variation among the genotypes, with 418 alleles detected and an average of 8.4 alleles per locus. The population structure divided the maize accessions into two main groups and an admixed group. Association analysis detected significant SSR markers associated with agronomic traits, which could be useful for future genetic studies. Further testing on a wide range of genotypes is needed to consider these markers as candidates for marker assisted selection for South Sudan maize improvement.

Efficacy of Carbon Nanodots and Manganese Ferrite (MnFe2O4) Nanoparticles in Stimulating Growth and Antioxidant Activity in Drought-Stressed Maize Inbred Lines

Muhammad Zahaib Ilyas, Hyeon Park, Young Sun Baek, Kyu Jin Sa, Myong Jo Kim, Ju Kyong Lee

Summary: The effects of carbon nanodots (CND) and manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanoparticles (NP) on drought stress tolerance in maize were studied. The results showed that CND-treated inbred lines exhibited better drought tolerance in terms of growth and physiological characteristics, while MnFe2O4 NP-treated lines showed better drought tolerance in terms of growth and physiological characteristics. These findings suggest that CND and MnFe2O4 NP can improve the response of different populations of maize to drought stress.
