Summary: P. frutescens seed oil and M. oleifera seed oil, which contain beneficial fatty acids and sterols for the skin, were mixed to enhance antioxidant activity. Microemulsions containing these oils were successfully formulated and characterized for their physical and chemical stability. The safety of the microemulsions was evaluated, and emulgels containing them were developed for safe delivery to human skin.

Summary: This study aimed to identify Perilla SSR markers (PSMs) associated with the five fatty acid contents and two seed characteristics of native Korean Perilla germplasm accessions. The results showed the correlation between the PSMs and the fatty acid components and seed characteristics, providing valuable molecular markers for the selection of germplasm accessions of the Perilla crop.

Summary: This study detected a large number of SSRs from the pepper genome, designed 240 SSR primers, and identified 33 SSR markers with high polymorphism in 147 accessions from 25 countries. The dendrogram clustered these accessions into seven major groups, providing SSR molecular marker resources and insight into genetic diversity of C. frutescens.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different UV-B irradiations on the accumulation of rosmarinic acid (RA) and anthocyanin, and the expression of genes related to biosynthetic pathways in red perilla. The results showed that UV-B irradiation at 6 W m(-2) for 16 h enhanced the concentration and content of RA in red perilla.

Summary: This study developed 58 novel EST-SSR markers from P. frutescens var. crispa and its mutant cultivar Antisperill, which can be used for population genetics and recombinant inbred line mapping analyses. These markers revealed significant genetic diversity and relationships among 94 P. frutescens genotypes, forming two major groups: Group I (var. crispa) and Group II (var. frutescens). The results provide insights into the genetic diversity and relationships of P. frutescens.

Summary: This study identified 212 AP2/ERF family members in the genome of Perilla and analyzed their characteristics. Transcriptome sequencing revealed up-regulated key enzyme genes involved in oil biosynthesis in high-oil and high-ALA varieties. Using WGCNA, significant correlations were found between 36 AP2/ERFs and 90 lipid metabolism genes, and 12 AP2/ERFs were identified as hub genes. Gene expression analysis identified three AP2/ERFs potentially playing a significant role in the regulation of oil accumulation in Perilla.

Summary: The present study aimed to detect the genomic regions associated with yield-attributing traits by genome-wide association mapping in Vigna species. A diverse panel of 98 wild and cultivated Vigna accessions was evaluated and genotyped to study the population genetic structure and trait associations. Several markers were found to be associated with multiple traits, and the population genetic structure analysis revealed different sub-populations within Vigna species.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of various perilla seed meal fractions and their impact on osteoporosis. The ethyl acetate fraction of seed meal showed the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, with a high content of rosmarinic acid. It was found that this fraction effectively suppressed RANKL-induced osteoclast formation by downregulating NF-kappa B, AP-1 activation, and NFATc1 expression, and inhibited ROS production as well. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction rich in rosmarinic acid has potential for osteoclastogenic protection and health promotion.
