This study analyzed the bioactive and antimicrobial properties of oven-dried beetroot, finding that beetroot peel exhibited higher content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and reducing power activity under all extraction solvents. The highest chlorogenic acid content in dried beetroot peel was extracted using a mixture of methanol and water (50% v/v). The 50% methanolic extract of both peel and pulp demonstrated the highest antibacterial and anticandidal potential.
Beetroot is a widely consumed crop all over the world and contains plenty of bioactive compounds. In this study, we analyzed the bioactive as well as the antimicrobial properties of the oven-dried beetroot (pulp and peel) using different solvents. The 50% methanolic extract yielded the highest content of total polyphenols and total flavonoids as well as the reducing power of the beetroot. The beetroot peel exhibited a higher content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and reducing power activity under all the extraction solvents. Mixture of methanol and water (50% v/v) extracted the highest chlorogenic acid (78.24 mg/100 g) of the dried beetroot peel, while 1,2-dihydroxybenzene was the most noteworthy phenolic compound (42.52 mg/100 g) in beetroot peel methanolic extract. The 50% methanolic extract of both peel and pulp demonstrated the highest antibacterial and anticandidal potential. These results can be helpful for beetroot consumption.

Iftekhar Hassan, Rais Ahmad Khan, Jameel Al-Tamimi, Hossam Ebaid, Fohad Mabood Husain, Ibrahim M. Alhazza

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the comparative ameliorative potential of ternary Cu and Zn-based complexes in ceasing CCl4-induced hepatotoxic insults. Results showed significant improvement in most parameters with the Cu (II) complex. Thus, the Cu (II) complex has more substantial ameliorative potential in preventing CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity.

Mohammed J. Hakeem, Javed Masood Khan, Ajamaluddin Malik, Fohad Mabood Husain, Sundus Mohammed Alresaini, Aqeel Ahmad, Prawez Alam

Summary: The synthetic food additive dye-induced amyloid fibrillation has various applications in the laboratory and industries. This study investigated the effect of Allura red (AR) on the fibrillation of ovalbumin (Ova) at pH 2.0. The influence of salt and pH on AR-induced Ova aggregation was also examined. Spectroscopic and microscopy techniques were used to characterize the changes. The results showed that AR induced aggregation at concentrations above 0.05 mM, and the size of aggregates increased with AR concentration. The aggregates induced by AR were confirmed to be amyloid-like aggregates. Salt had minimal effects on AR-induced aggregation. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing amyloid fibrillation induced by AR dye in protein for food safety purposes.

Sodium Hydroxide Hydrothermal Extraction of Lignin from Rice Straw Residue and Fermentation to Biomethane

Tawaf Ali Shah, Sabiha Khalid, Hiba-Allah Nafidi, Ahmad Mohammad Salamatullah, Mohammed Bourhia

Summary: The study aims to enhance the economic efficiency of producing biomethane from rice straw by pretreating it with NaOH and recycling the solution. The results show that 5% NaOH treatment can remove 73.6% of lignin from the rice straw, and the recycled NaOH solution further reduces the lignin content by 55.5%. After 30 days of incubation, the methane output from the NaOH-treated rice straw is increased by 6-8 times, and the biogas yield is improved by 80-124%. Furthermore, recycling the NaOH solution reduces chemical consumption, decreases water usage, and has the potential to achieve optimum methane yield in anaerobic digestion.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the daily intake of ten types of artificial food color additives (AFCAs) by school children aged 6 to 17 years. Results showed that Carmoisine and Sunset Yellow were the most consumed AFCAs, while Erythrosine was consumed the least. Most permitted colors exceeded their acceptable daily intakes in the 6-11 years of age groups. Further studies are needed to understand the potential health effects of high intake of AFCAs in the test population.

Summary: Lactoferrin was purified from camel milk colostrum using cation exchange chromatography and its antimicrobial potential was assessed. The purified lactoferrin showed inhibitory effects against methicillin-resistant S. aureus, S. aureus, K. pneumonia, and multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa. The iron-free lactoferrin and hydrolyzed lactoferrin were more effective against MRSA. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed distortions in bacterial cells exposed to lactoferrin. The lactoferrin forms also exhibited antibiofilm activity and dose-dependent cytotoxicity against human lung cancer cells.

Summary: In the past two decades, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has exponentially increased, posing a serious threat to human health. AMR is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Despite a successful discovery of new antibiotics in the 20th century, little progress has been made in this area recently. Due to the rise in AMR and the slow progress in antibiotic discovery, there is an urgent need for new intervention methods to combat infectious diseases. One approach is to search for biofilm and quorum sensing inhibitors, and plants are a rich source of compounds that could exhibit these properties.

Transcriptomic characterization of Trichoderma harzianum T34 primed tomato plants: assessment of biocontrol agent induced host specific gene expression and plant growth promotion

Mohd Aamir, V. Shanmugam, Manish Kumar Dubey, Fohad Mabood Husain, Mohd Adil, Waquar Akhter Ansari, Ashutosh Rai, Pankaj Sah

Summary: In this study, the complex interaction between Trichoderma and the tomato genome was investigated, revealing transcriptional and metabolic changes triggered by Trichoderma colonization. Gene expression profile analysis identified differentially expressed significant genes, showing a positive correlation between the host and Trichoderma. Several genes were found to be consistently significant, with some showing upregulated expression and others downregulated expression during Trichoderma-tomato interaction. Transcription factors related to systemic defense and flowering were also differentially expressed. Protein-protein interaction network analysis and Weighted Correlation Gene Network Analysis further revealed the genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and nitrogen metabolism. Overall, this study highlights the importance of Trichoderma-induced microbial priming in reprogramming the host genome for transcriptional response and understanding the complex regulatory networks in beneficial microbial interactions.
